I need help everyone. I thought I was leaking coolant through the stock oil cooler (2g) but I was wrong. (I am converting this to an external cooler system in the process.) There seems to be a leak over in the water pump area. I am trying to get the lower shield off but I am having issues so I can't see anything yet. Can anyone give me some ideas of what to look for in the area. My engine was rebuilt last February (2005) and had a new water pump installed. No more warranty on the engine. Also any advice on getting the lower shield off. There is that one beast of a bolt behind the pulley, does the pulley have to come off to get to it?

One last thing. I pulled the stock oil cooler/filter unit off. I installed the Evo unit that eliminates the oil cooler side of things. While putting the bolts back in, one snapped in half without even a lot of pressure. I went and got an easy out. Well I managed to screw up the easy out and in the drilling process destroyed the threads and fused the bolt to the block. I figure I am going to have to HeliCoil it, any advice on the HeliCoil size?

As for the water pump leaking, its probably a bad bearing. I find it pretty common in DSMs. Is the water pump making a whining noise on startup, or when your on the throttle. As far as the cover goes, i usually jack the motor up to have easier access to the timing side, when doing timing and replacing the water pump. It usually works well.

Turned out to be one bolt that was loose on the water pump. I spent most of the time switching from the stock oil cooler to an external unit. Thanks for the comments though, would have been a good thing to check.

I know you have found your problem, however I'd just like point something out for other people that have a leak on the timing side. There is an o-ring that sits in the end of the water pipe that the water pump slides onto, sealing it. I've seen this oring go bad a few times, resulting in a steady drip of coolant.
