are valves suposed to look like this?

I just got my bottom end finished and started putting together my head(i only had to put the cams on).When i got the cams on i realized that all that most of the valves where open.I never took a look of my valves before took off my cams/head.So heres some pics.Its cyl 1-4 in order.I had to take the pics with my phone so they are not as really clear.please help any suggestions would be fine.o yea, the car was loseing compression in cylinder 4 due to bad compression. the other cylinders where holding good compression readings.when i let removed my cams and head,i just let them sit when i was rebuilding the bottom end.

Why did you do the bottom end, what happened to the motor. It looks like your valves are slightly bent. Did your old pistons have cuts in the tops from hitting the valves, if they do I would make sure you do a small rebuild on the head and replace the valves before putting it back on. You dont want to mess up your new pisons

the block had bad scratches on cyl 4's bore.and i had a spun rod bearing.my pistons dont have bump marks on it.before i started the rebuild,my compression was good,except for cylinder 4.
 
When you take everything off, you should've put the whole motor at TDC. Therefore, when everything's back together and you start it, everything will be timed right. The cams and gears need to be at TDC also, which will place the valves at TDC.

And it looks almost as if cylinders 2 and 3 were getting some sort of preignition or detonation.
 
Did you bleed the pressure off of the lifters before reassembly? If not, they will hold the valves open and cause some valve damage when you try to start the engine. Remove the cams, bleed the lifters, and before assembly, check and make sure all valves are closed. You can also pour some fluid in each intake and exhaust runner to verify that the valves are sealing. Just remember, exhaust runner on cyl 4 will not hold fluid unless you block off the egr hole before filling. Once you reinstall the cams, you will see that a few valves will be open but not all of them.

thanks for the reply.this is my first rebuild and i didnt know that the lifters have to be bleed.i still have many things to learn about dsms but im learning as i go.thanks again
