So, I've had the car for years now and it's got zero mods. I've always talked about it and finally I got some money from an insurance claim (damaged paint) and think I'm going to smack it into the drivetrain instead.

I read the upgrade path for the turbo 2g dsm from the opening page here and figure it'll be a cold day in hell when I can afford to get a turbo so I guess I'll start with that.

This is not a dragstrip only car as it is my daily commuter but I want to add more 'umph' to it so I was thinking on that Evo 3 big 16. Does anyone have a better suggestion or am I way off? I'm hoping to get an FMIC or perhaps exhaust with the remainder of my quid. Suggestions?

Before you do any turbo mods, you need to do supporting mods 1st. Fuel pump, injectors, SAFC/DSMlink etc...Unless you like blowing up your car?

It doesn't even mention injectors until the 'Stage 2' path though? Why would that nuke the car?

you dont need injectors, get a walbro 255 fuel pump with a fpr, also you have to do most of the suporting mods, the stock bov is worthless, the intake is very restrictive and if you replace it youll hear what im talking about. You need a boost gauge first off though.

you can run the evo iii 16g with the stock fuel injectors just get a high volume fuel pump to up fuel pressure. also dont go over 11lbs with the 16g on the stock inj. as youll hit a crazy fuel cut. your best bet is to get an ebc some gauges a n1 dp, and n1 catback. maybe a new bov or something. for 1400 bucks you can do alot that wont hurt the drivability of the car. pm if you want to go the other route i mentioned as i have all the parts from my 2g that i can let go for cheap...

Ok, so you have your new shiny turbo, but only have stock injectors, so you won't be able to run much boost at all. A 16G can way more than max out your stock injectors. You'll be faster with the stock turbo combined with larger injectors/fuel pump/MBC/BOV/fuel management than you will a 16G with stock injectors/pump...

Honestly, before I got a turbo, I'd get larger injectors (680cc), bigger fuel pump (Walbro 190lph), DSMlink, 1G BOV, MBC, 2.5" downpipe/exhaust. If you did the work yourself & bought a few things used, you would come in probably right at $1400.

With a logger, you don't "need" a boost gauge just yet...Just tune by knock. You see knock, add fuel...If knock is still there after adding fuel, run less boost.

If I was in your position. I would research everything that i want to get, then try to find as much parts used. My boy picked up a small 16g for 150 and he was eating me alive best 150 he spent. I regret not buying more stuff used. I got my exhaust turbo back from a guy on tuners. 350 shipped form cali very good piece. That alone saved me money. The more you save the more you can buy. I even went on ebay for my IC setup

Maintenance, intake + exhaust + bov + mbc is what i'd go with to start off.
With your budget this is exactly what I would recommend. He said he wanted a little more umph to his daily driver--which does not imply a mid 12 street/drag car. In this case there is no need for him to go all out and get a 255/fpr/huge injectors/DSMLink in my opinion.

Maintenance, Boost Leak Tester, and then DSMLink. No question!
What would be the point of dsm link so early/ no mods?
A logger sure, but a dsm link? Thats just a waste of a lot of money right now.
just a flashy gizmo at this point really...

The problem with not getting a new turbo is this though: I've got 150 000 miles on the car and if I don't get a new hairdryer, mine will bust and I won't have the quid to replace it.

But believe me when I say I really appreciate all these suggestions! Used parts are very tempting, but I'm afraid to get burned. No real way to shield against that (paypal/ebay and less than 200 is all I'm aware of). I'm a cop, but I'm not about to fly out of my J.D to pistol whip someone (maybe :D ).

My car's at 147,000 and in great health--just make sure your maintenance is done regularly. As for your turbo dying, my T25 was in immaculate condition when i took it off at ~135,000 and yours may be too. Just check shaft play every once in a while, take care of your oil, etc and it will be fine.

The only problem I'm aware of with the car is it's got a slow oil leak and I'm not sure where its actually going/coming from because there is never any oil on the ground. It's not a fast leak but it ends up low come oil change time and I can normally smell it when I exit.
