Ok so ive failed to pass emissions multiple times (passed with the 400$ repair exemption last year) and i need to pass this year. I feel like ive tried it all...plugs/wires, PVC, filter, new cat, oil change, 'emissions passing formula', timing, honeycombs, timing, egr, boost levels etc... I have 3" turbo back with a cat and really no vacuum system. I have come very close to passing except a high hydrocarbon count. I was told by someone that because of the 3" exhaust the restriction on the cat is low therefore not causing enough heat for the catalytic converter to work efficently. Does anyone know anything i can do to help me pass? I am in desperation right now AKA thinking of stupid ideas like 2 cats in my exhaust??? or getting an AFC (which i need anyways) and messing with the fuel?? keep in mind this an OB1 dyno style emissions test.

Thanks for any help...any AT ALL LOL

You're passing the visual inspection, right? I have 3" high flow cat, muffler, and otherwise no emissions stuff (no charcoal canister, EGR removed, etc.). I passed fine.

You might want to try driving around for like 20 mins before going to the emissions place. Take a drive on the freeway, cruise around, etc. Just get the car up to operating temp and everything running fine.

You have no vacuum system? Like from the throttle body? If not then you need to hook all those vacuum lines back up... or you wont pass....

Yes, it passes the visual inspection fine. But like Brute, i have removed everything emissions related and with it all hooked up it did even worse. The place is atleast 20 miles away so i dont think warming up to operating temp is the problem. Ive heard of many people passing the test with similar set up as mine (w/o vacuum) But for some reason I CANTT

Excess hydrocarbons sounds like you're running rich so leaning things out might be a good idea.

Is the cat located in the stock location? It may not be hot enough. Boost like a crazy man before testing it.

How can i lean it out without an AFC? adjust the timing? or mess with the MAS? Should the test be ran at stock boost or around 15 where it is now? or it wont really matter because the operator doesn't hit full boost anyways when they're driving it...? The cat is in the stock location as far as i know ( approx- 1 ft. after downpipe)

Why the hell didn't they tell you why you faild. Why dont you find out why you failed before you ask us whats wrong. They should have givin you a paper saying what needs to be fixed and so on. If not call them up and ask. Judging by the parts you named its something with the exhaust and maybe the output of it. Too much nitrogen maybe?Im sure that emissions passing form thing does more harm then good as well. Theres a lot of bad reviews around here.

I don't know how they do things in Mass., but in Missouri, the people that run the emission testing centers don't know crap. They aren't techs, they are just minimum wage employees following a set of directions. They would have no idea what was wrong with your car. When my car failed I took it to the local Mitsu dealer, and had one of the techs look at it. He immediately recognized that my cat was bad, and sent me to a muffler shop to get a new one. Original poster, I would take the test results to a dealer, and see what they think. Can't hurt (unless they want to charge you ;) ).

Yeah get the car nice and hot. If you have to wait in line... keep the car running so that it will remain hot.

Our Turbo performance cars like to run A/F ratio's in between 11.0-12.0....Street cars with good emission run up to 14.4 .... So lean out you Air/Fuel mixture before you go, or do it in line if you can. If you have to lean it out at home and then drive it to the place, BE SURE NOT TO get on the gas ...cause you don't want to go WOT with a lean mixture. Lean it out just to pass emissions, then set it back to 11-12 A/F.

Yeaa they give you a little sheet with the numbers on it and a packet of stuff to help you try to fix it which i have already done everything. I also paid something redic like 200$ for an emissions diagnostic at a place (just so i could get the $$ exemption on an emission related repair) and they said everything was fine except my "magancores are shit wires, go get some quality wires and you'll pass" thats what they said. Anyways it still failed, I'm on the verge of buying a new turbo (which i need anyways) and say the exhaust side was cracked and shoot for the exemption again ahah heyy the exahust side of the turbo should be considered an emissions repair right?

I can't lean it out to 11.0-12 because i dont have a wideband or an SAFC, hmm i do need those items eventually anyways but we'll see.

And i dont want to take it to the dealer because they will tell me to jump off a cliff and hook up all the vaccum. I jsut think my A/F ratio is off for good emissions.

I am about to buy a new DSM, 3in turbo back exhaust, no cat, no o2. To pass emissions, do all i have to do is add the cat and o2 sensor... keep in mind this car is heavily modded and running high boost. also, aside from leaning it out, would turning the boost way down help out also?
