Has the line to the evap canister come loose? The canister is on the firewall to the left of center.

Build one of these if you don't already have one. http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ICtester.html
Do a boost leak test and get a spray bottle filled with water and a lot of dish soap.
It will bubble up like magic bubbles when you've found a leak.

You may have a bad injector o-ring allowing fuel to pass between the fuel rail and your injector.

Also, remove your battery and check your fuel filter connections too.
The interval for fuel filter replacement is every 60k miles.
Also check the charcoal canister hoses like gernoff mentioned.

There is a little blue plug on the firewall right about in the middle of the engine bay.
That little plug is used to force the fuel pump to pump fuel and allows you to test the fuel system without starting your engine.

I really don't understand how a boost leak test will help him find a gas smell in his engine bay.

The MAS meters all the air coming in, and adjusts fuel to make the preset A/F ratio. But when some of that air leaks out (boost leak), suddenly all that fuel doesn't have air to mix with. This makes for a rich condition, and if it's bad enough, you could smell the gas.

Yeah, you may be right, but I am speaking from experience.
I too smelled a fuel odor, and it turned out to be torn injector seals.
I had boost leaks on all 4 injector seals, and on two of them the orange o-rings were pretty wasted and allowing fuel to leak.

That's how he could find a gas smell in his engine bay...

I didn't wanna stomp on you bro, I just wanted you to explain yourself.

A lot of people throw around "check for boost leaks" whenever someone posts a problem and sometimes it's unrelated. People will ignore it if it isn't explained why it's relative to their problem.

Thanks for explaining.
