I'm looking to buy another dsm and the owner says that the engine was replaced about a year ago....i poked around a bit, but everything looks untouched.

Is there an VIN # on the engine somewhere to compare to the one on the dash?

I dont believe there is, best bet is to get the reciete(sp?) and do a little searching with the shop that "did" it.

hmmmm.....guess i'm out of luck. It has the original tranny, and he says he did the work himself. It's starting to sound kinda shady.

There should be a vin # on the engine. Look at the transmission side of the engine, upper left corner, just below the head. Very small letters and numbers. You may have to spray some cleaner to get the gunk off, but there should be a vin # in that area. I didn't know it was there until I got the engine back from being cleaned at the machine shop.

Mine has the actual vin # that matched the vin on the dash. I also have a 6 bolt block that, once cleaned up by the machine shop, revealed a vin # in the same spot as the 7 bolt. The serial number for the engine is in the front, exhaust side.

As far as the transmission, I can't remember. I had it out last year when I sent it to Shepard Racing. There were numbers on the housing, however, it could have been a vin or a serial number.

I just remembered something that may help, if you can't locate the vin on the engine.

The serial number for the engine is easier to see. It is on the front, exhaust side. Look about halfway down, more towards the drivers side, near the alternator. There should be a flat spot near there, on the engine. You may have to use some sort of cleaner to see the numbers and letters, however, they are much larger that the vin and there are probably only 6 characters instead of 17.

For my son's car, I contacted the local Mitsubishi dealership and gave them the vin number from the dash and the serial number from the engine and they were able to verify that the engine was the original that came with the car.

thanks for the info. guys....i'm going back to check it out tommorrow.

just to clear things up, are both of these numbers (serial and/or VIN) on the head? or is either one on the block?
