:talon: Anyone have the issue or the outter axel boot ripping? I had the issue on mine, Im not sure how it happend. How easy is it to fix this without taking the axel out? Whats easier?
 
Eh dude, rip in the axle boot? No problem. As long as you haven't put miles on any nasty/muddy roads or gravel roads with it ripped, then your fine for now. To fix it easily, just get something to cover the rip and zip-tie it, thats an easy way. Don't really matter, as long as it keeps crap out. If you want to take the axle out and put a new boot on, go for it, thats not hard either, just more time consuming. I had the same problem, my boot ripped on the front driver side, I just took a big plastic bag, cut it up, patched the boot with it and used two zipties. Simple. But if you are planning on doing 20ft air jumps and being a star car for some Fast and the Furious movie, then it might be a cheap ugly way to fix it... =)
 
If the tear let any kind of debris in, then you will probably want to replace the entire CV shaft. Once road debris gets inside of the boost, it slowly tears up and destroys the CV joint. Eventually, it will start "clicking" around corners, and after time, the joint could completely fail.

If it was a recent tear, and the joint is free of debris, then you can purchase a split boot to replace your torn one. The split boots are not a nice as the OE style boots, but it will allow you to replace the boot without removing the whole shaft. Also, you will need to refill it with new bearing grease.
 
It is not too difficult to replace. Do it right the first time and get the replacement boot that is not a split boot. You will not regret it.
 
Im with TwoLiterLaser axles arn't that expensave so I would just replace it. It only takes about 25 min to have the axle out and a fresh one back it and your on the road again. The hardest thing to do is get the big nut off and pry the axle out of the trans. Good luck to ya.

and its not like autozone sells remanufactured axles for 60 dollers or anything. :p
 
Ok cause the car hasnt been driven yet. Just moved from where I swapped out the engine to a parking spot. So Im not worried about debrie. So maybe it would be easier to replace the boot and have the axle taken out. Didnt know if I had to drop the t-case and stuff.
 
YAY I found the other half of the original axel in my trunk and it's got a brand new boot. WOOT WOOT!!!

Front CV shafts are easy. First, you need to remove the wheel (obviously) and then the axle nut that's behind it. If the axle nut doesn't budge, try using an acetline (sp?) torch to heat it up first. Then use a pickle fork (available from Autozone for $12) and split the ball joint. (you might also need to remove the lower shock bolts - I can't remember) Then push the knuckle aside and pry the CV shaft from the tranny. It's fairly simple, and mostly self-explanatory once you get in there.
 
I had problems pulling my axles nut, didn;t have a torch and ended up breaking a breaker bar, I simply pulled the brake caliper off, then the lower shock bolts as well as the ball joint and tie rod l( I didn;t use a fork but a heavy hammer on the knuckle ). Once it is out pry the axle out with a pry bar, remove the inner cv & boot, slide the outer one up and out the same end and do the reverse for installation, it can be a lil messy if you aren't patient. I have found a hammer to the knuckle is the best way that way you dont damage the boot. Dont hit the joint hit the casting if you hit it hard and have a little pressure pushing up on the joint it will just come apart it may take a couple hig hits but it works.
