Hi guys
Possibly thinking of a turbo upgrade. t28,16g, or evo 16g? Found that you can get a remanufactured t28 for $600 on slowboy. Then I was thinking that its so easy to find good deals on 16g's, just get one and a 2nd gen install for it. Then I found out that evo's are going pretty cheap on ebay. Around 350 brand new in box. Then 125 for the install kit. So it would be around 500 with shipping for both items. How good are the evo's compared to the other two? Whats everyone's oppinions?

OH I heard that you could get by without an install kit by just getting a new oil line a j pipe and something else. Is that true?

thanks

this really denpends on what you are trying to accomplish with your car. can you post up a little more information about power goals, if it wiil be daily driven, other mods on your car. this will make it easier for people to help you out with a decision.

Unfortunatly yeah it will be a daily driver. Dont have the cash to get another car. Back a couple moths ago I was seriously throwin around the idea of getting a 1st get for my winter/tuner car. Then keeping the gst for the daily driver. And im still leaning toward that but unless I get some $ It will take a while for that to happen. Right now the gst is pretty stock. Its got a greddy bov, high flow cat, k&n filter. What I was planning on doing is new ic piping, turbo back, boost gauge, boost controller, either new fuel pump or rewire it. Possibly a few other things but thats pretty much it. Definetly the ic piping first though. Im still leaning toward a 1g if I get a new job. Cuz im not real crazy on tuning on this car I kinda want to keep it close to stock.:)

It doesn't sound like you'll be really squeezing your turbo for every last ounce of power, so I would suggest a 16G if you can find it cheaper. The EvoIII is a variant of the 16G with a larger housing - the differences are there, but I don't think you'll notice them if you'll be keeping your car close to stock.

Rewiring the stock fuel pump isn't something you do instead of replacing it, you should both upgrade and rewire the connections...

EvoIII would be the largest of the three you have listed and would be my first choice. Great street turbo with lots of potential with the proper supporting mods. Without fuel & logger upgrades you will want to keep the boost 14 psi or under as any higher and you risk damaging the motor because of lack of fuel, you will need to rewire the fuel pump (yes even @ 14 psi it will make quite abit more power then the t25 @ 16 psi). As for buying the evoIII, I wouldn't go to Ebay, it seems like your new & there are alot of knock off turbo's selling there, do a search here and you'll see what Im talking about. www.turbochargers.com does have the real MHI evoIII on for $459 right now and thats probably the best deal you'll find. For the install kit you need a j pipe, and an oil feed line min. You can just bend the factory lines to make them work, file the oil return line mounting holes on the turbo side. Its also good to pick up a new 7cm turbo to exhaust mani gasket, 02 housing gasket and oil return line gaskets.

I would seriously consider the EVO3 as no one has really mentioned that they've noticed a difference in the spool between the EVO3 and a regular (small) 16g. Both flow a little more than the t28 and the EVO3 flows the most. Some around here are running 27+ psi on race day. So you can take this turbo off of your daily driver and drop back in your original turbo. if you decide to get a 1g for a build up.

I will say this, though: many have run 22-24 psi on the EVO3 and have a reliable daily driver that hauls. Heck! I'm running an 18g and I run my car every day to work sites and other daily activities (i got 33 mpg with my last tank).

You'll never reach the potential of either turbo on the stock side mount, though. So if you're going to get either turbo then you'll need a better ic setup or don't bother unless you're going to pull the turbo off later and get a "play" car. If you just want a little more 'umpf', then may I suggest that you look for a good, used 14b. They're all around. And they hold boost to redline and can handle 15 psi for 100,000+ miles. And 15 psi is fine for your stock fuel system as long as you rewire your stock pump. And is ok with your stock sidemount. Then save for your project and get exactly the turbo you want to match your goals.
