Hey guys,
DSMs are of course awesome rides, but some people have been telling me that they arent all that reliable in the long run...I didnt start believing this until I had a pretty serious oil leak. I had a shop replace the rear main oil seal, and that fixed 1 of the 2 leaks. Took it to a mechanic and he said my head gasket is pretty much ruined, so Im fixin that over this next week (plus the valve cover gasket and whatever else I can replace while working on the head gasket).

After taking it to a Japanese motor company to have the rear main oil seal fixed however, my CEL light came on. Plugged it up and got the P1494 code...my Leak Pump I think is the jist of what the code means. Also the tranny kinda jerks when it downshifts (its an A/T) which didnt happen until the rear seal was replaced :-/

These problems just seem to keep coming and coming as I continue to modify and work on the car! What should I do? Keep working with this one, or stop now and trade in? Opinions are of course appreciated and wanted.

Thanks guys,

Adam

I would get rid of it personally and invest in a turbo one. Start from scratch again and make sure you do everything right. Tuning is KEY. Get the basics first like datalogger and fuel control after you get intake, IC piping, boost gauge, mbc, stuff like that. The car will only run as well as the person driving it. Make sure to take it to a reputable place that works on cars. No need to take it to a fancy "japanese" shop. I have had a lot of backyard mechanics do excellent work on my cars in the past. Research something before you buy it.

Well he is wondering if he should trade his NT in possibly for a different make of car. You are telling him to get a turbo DSM -- turbo cars ESPECIALLY DSM's require more maintenance than other vehicles and they need extra cooling and warming up intervals, and many other things are incorperated into the system in order for them to go wrong. Also, the more mods you have on your DSM the less reliable they are..so when you mess and fidle with stuff remember that you are wearing down on its already worn system. Its all about personal taste, and your personal experience with DSM's. Ive had 2 and 1 needed some heavy duty work (GSX) and my other (95 N/T) only had the normal wear/tear and I loved it for that.
If you want to see real unreliability go check out domestic car manufacture's that cant sell cars becuase they cant make it off the lot before something major goes wrong.
Have faith in Mitsubishi. :dsm:

your right, partially, the more mods you have the more regular maintenance is needed. reliability comes w/ experience. certain pre-cautions that are taken.
