I will always be a DSMer at heart, but the Volkswagen Golf and GTI are pretty bad ass. What are your opinions about my decision?

Well, since your asking opinions, I think your nuts! They are o.k....but not "bad ass" thats for sure. If your moving from DSM to another vehicle. at least move to a more reliable one. If you think parts are high for our cars, wait till you go euro...oh boy, are you in for a shock! And I speak from experience.

I'm not sure why you would want to do that, but I would call and get some prices on what it would cost for maintenance items such as water pump, fuel pump, timing belt etc and compare them to your DSM. You may be surprised. . The support of this site is second to none when it comes to maintenance, modifications, and general ideas on improvement of your particular vehicle. Look at the potential gains you can get here and compare them to the VW. Now, if you still want to trade, all I can say is good luck to you.

Good Luck

vw parts are super cheap. i only owned vw's earlier and parts are cheap. bought a dsm because i want something fast ;) the golfs are very reliable espesially diesels.. and parts are cheap... 20 bux for water pump heh
i work for vw parts btw :)

If anything I would trade up to a GSX! I don't care much for VW, but they are about as fast stock for stock, if your talking about a turbo. I think you can do more as far as speed for less money when it comes to a DSM though.

only VW worth getting in a 2 door is a Corrado VR6. check them out,far better then the Golf in styling and performance.

I agree with the styling of the Corrado but the flagship of VW performance has always been the GTI

dyno_detour - You will love the VW (especially the new 2.0L FSI turbo :) ), its got a way different feel compared to DSMs, I was a dubber for 12 years, had a GTI 16V with a Matrix turbo sytems kit and it was quick!! :) only reason i sold it was when i wanted to add an FMIC and found out Id have to give up my A/C, hell no!! Ill say this...DSMs for drag and raw power/speed, VWs for a well balanced all around type of racer :thumb:

Are you sure? From what I've been able to locate on the web, the Corrado is pretty darn good, all around as a performance car. True the power to weight ratio is probably not as good, but as a general rule I believe the Corrado is alittle lacking in the "up to date" go goodies, but only because of updates in performance products since its introduction. If there is a performance shortcoming compared to the GTi, its can be overcome with modding it.But back to the original question, stick with the DSM if you want awesome looks and all out performance.

the only good Volkswagens are the old school ones anything 90 and new have problems a lot of my friends have them new ones that is and all they have is problem they take it to the dealer to be check and the dealer can't find any thing

yea IMO don't get a volkswagen they are wiring nightmares and I know 4 people in my area that don't have reverse in their volkswagen. Good luck tho, there is nothing any of us can tel you to change your mind if you really want one. good luck

thats for sure i mean push button parking brake. come on that is a problem wating to happen
hey nice car same as mine

If you read up on alot of VW's they also aren't that reliable as you would think a Euro car would be. My brother bought a Passat (They are nice), but then I went to research and they have reliability issues. Well to my knowledge they do.

take it from someone who used to be VW tech.

you don't want a v-dub. of any kind. period.

yes i worked at VW as well and their 1.8T and the 5V engines in general are junk. Brand new cars would have to be put on battery chargers because they cant hold a charge. The motors blow up if you run anything over stock boost and the turbo cant even handle what its currently boosting. they are a hassle to work on- changing a headlight usually takes a good hour at the least. If you fix something on it another thing will go wrong. its just not worth the time/money to get one. and the company was founded by Hitler so that is a deterrant for me as well. LOL. its your choice if you want to waste your money. VW's are worse off than the reliability of a DSM. :dsm: :talon: :laser: forever.

My good friend has a '98 GTI VR6. Lowered on KW true coilovers, strut and swaybars and decent tires. Seems like a good combo right? Now, my DSM is lowered on a non-adjustable Tokico suspension, no sways or strut bars, equally decent tires. Now, Im no Paul Tracy, but my car outhandled the Dub by a good bit. Lets not even mention the understeer or wheel hop.

On to the engine. Very smooth and torquey, but I dont really understand the people drooling over the engine sound. It sounds like my old SOHC Neon with an intake and exhaust. He installed a cold air intake which required him to take off his front bumper and one headlight along with various other parts WTF .

Reliability is questionable, but has not been horrible. Transmission is about on par with my DSM's, notchy and grinds. The interior is pretty nice and well thought out, a little beat up though.

All in all, my DSM is faster, better handling and more fun to drive (looks better also).

Id say sell your DSM and buy a AWD DSM :thumb:

I'm not going to come in and say that I know a lot about VW's, but I have had one for about six months now and my sister and her husband have had one, atleast one at that, for as long as I have known him. My car has been reliable as you can ask for. It's just a 4 banger with a little turbo and it gets up and goes decently. I have a Passat(looking for a 1G DSM for a decent price, anyone got one for sale?). My brother in law has a Jetta and he has had it since it was new and I think that was about 55,000 miles ago and he hasn't had any problems and I love his car. The interiors are unreal if you ask me. And they look pretty sporty too if you stick a nice set of rims on them.

Okay, what kind of replies do you really expect to get on a DSM site talking about getting rid of one...on that note...

VW's are great cars...for girls...or ### guys [please dont flame me Mods, quite yet...] Jetta is statistically proven to be the #1 car for ### men in america...just somethin to think about. GIrls love VW's, and come on...when have you ever really been scared of running your DSM against a VW? But if your into reverse purple indiglo gauges...go for it!

...just my biased opinion

ok sprayingst, no need to bash that hard bro. my friend (which is not ###) had a jetta that sprayed a 75 shot and beat a lot of gsts. if the guy wants a vw then dont flame him for it. he was just wanting our opinion. the dsm is better in a lot of ways but you can make a golf gti or any kind pretty quick. the turboed golfs are preety quick stock and iwouldnt mind haveing one myself if i came around to it. everybody has there one taste in cars. but you do know that vw has a lot of electrical problems and everybody hats that crap, so its up to you and good luck with what you come up with. landon :thumb:

My brother and my girlfriend have a vw golf. I dont find them unreliable from what i have seen from their cars. Though everyone does tell my brother he has a chick car. I picked it out for him and i only did because he hates anything mechanical, but then again what do you expect from a little brother that wears girl pants? :toobad: .

european versions are far more reliable than US, and i'm speaking from experience because i lived over there and had a golf gti and alfa romeo :)
but i still think that dsm's are far better than vw

p.s. anyone seen the new vw pheaton?

Are you serious? Maybe the vr6 is different but my friend has two supercharged corrados a 91 and a 93 while they're gorgeous vehicles, they have no power stock from the factory. Hell they don' t even have four valves per cylinder... when my talon was stock we raced at the track and he lost by almost two seconds. I ran a 14.59 to his 16.37, and that was his best run. The whole night he was pulling 17's or worse.
But all in all the car is really fun to drive, and its not exactly a common vehicle so he always gets head turns.

The G60(supercharged 4cyl) and SLC(VR6) Corrados feel completely different. SLC feels way more powerful and torquey.
