Went to start up my car and as soon as I did I herd the loud clacking sound no dsm owner whats to hear coming from their engine. I shut it off right away and checked the timing on the bottom end. It was deff. off. Idler and tensioner pulleys took a lot of force to get to spin. My question to all of you leet engine guys is = Do you think the valves are pooped or not, It happend at start up and not at heavy driving or high rpm ranges. Or will I have to deff. pull the head off the car and check them? Any advice would be great. Thank you for reading - Jeremiah

i do not know about that LOL
if my dsm makes a sound that means it is runing
and that is a sound that i do not hear much

More likely than not, you've bent some valves.

The clacking sound you heard was metal on metal if you said the timing marks are off.

The starter puts quit a bit of force on the engine to turn it over. Hell, you can bend valves by manually cranking the motor if you use a breaker bar.

Before you do a compression test as advised in a previous post though. Reset the timing belt correctly, and see if it rotates by hand freely. Then do a compression test so you don't do any more damage than may be already done.

 I want to hear that running sound tooooo! F#$%ing injectors haven't arrived yet!!! Lol, my new timing belt kit came in though. POINTLESS to change it now if it is still filling 1 and 4 with fuel!

Back on topic. The compression test will help you determine if you have bent your valves in the event that your timing did skip. How was your car running when you shut the engine off last? As far as a clacking sound, it could just be your lifters ticking since the oil drains down to the oil pan and settles. As far as your timing is concerned, did you try manually spinning your motor to TDC and see if the timing marks line up as they should? I'd be worried if the motor DIDN'T take a substantial amount of force to spin! :D

I cranked the motor my hand very slowly, 2 see if the marks are off, And they are very off. The car ran like poop before I turned it off, Thought I had an exhaust leak or boost leak because it took forever to build boost. It also idled like poop. So I rebuilt an extra 90 TB I had laying around, replaced the shaft seals and cleaned it. Ran a boost pressure test and replaced some exhaust gaskets and bolts. Back to the subject - I turned the engine over by hand very slowly with a 1/2 socket wrench. It was a little hard but I didn't put a lot of force into it. It was able to be cranked all the way around. I"ll have to put on a new tensioner pulley and idler pulley and timing belt. Then I'll run a comp. test before I rip the head off. Thanks for all the advice it is really nice to have some help when things so bad. - Jeremiah
btw is stand. comp. 1g 6bolt stock int. 161 ? or something close to that? Thanks again :dsm:

If the car sounded like it was only running on a few cylinders when this sound occured, I wouldn't even bother with a compression check, your valves are already poo poo'd and you run risk of further damage. However if your hell bent on checking the compression now, 160 - 170 is SOP for 1g stock piston'd cars.

I would hope it sounded like it was only running on a few cylinders seeings thats all it has is a few. LOL.

True to some, however I consider 2 or 3 a few. I meant few as in less than a complete circuit.

Let me rephrase, If it sounded like a Subaru, it's got bent valves.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll have to pull the head Later tonight when I get home from work. It deff. sounded like poop. :barf: :dsm:
