I know this has been answered over and over but I searched and found many pictures of different people posting where the speed sensor is for the 2G GST. My speedometer is screwing up and I need to replace it this weekend. I have a few pictures, but when i look at my engine bay the pics don't match up to where this thing is???

I have spent the last 2 hours searching this board and I have pictures of the Non-Turbo loacation and a 1G location. I have a Auto 2G Spyder GST.

Here are the pics of what i have, but they match up to my engine. Looking for the Output Speed sensor....

If this is it, i cant tell what part of the engine this is....

Thank-you soo mych guys, i dont want to spend the money on taking it to the delaer

What do you mean by screwing up? It works off and on or it doesn't work at all? Off and on it's a dirty connection or a loose connection.
There's a sensor behind the speedometer that controls the cluster and there's a sensor that goes directly into the top of the tranny. It's got a gear on the end of it that sits inside the tranny. If you gauge doesn't work at all pull that sensor out and make sure there is a gear still attached to the sensor. Approx. cost for new VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is 70 from the dealership. It however DOES NOT come with the gear.

I think its loose, becuase it works on and off. I just want to try and push it in and see if that helps, i just can't find it. I have a Chiltons manual and it doesnt mention it. There are a ton of threads on this topic but i just cant seem to find it.

So I need to lift the car and reach in from underneath? Can i reach it from under the hood?

here is another pic i found on it, but this must be a 1G, becuase it doesnt look like my stock GST..

Is is possible it just became unplugged?

Thanks so much, i feel like an idiot here :p

ok, thanks. Do you think its the same for a 5-speed or Auto? I just cant find it on my 99 auto. I wonder if its just not red and thats what i have been looking for..

Hey, just wondering, what exactly is wrong with your speedo? I am also having a problem with mine. When I accelerate my speedo goes straight to 0 and stays there. But when I coast or let off the gas completely the speedo reads almost perfect. What gives??

Appears to be the same. I don't know about the plug color. It's a brownish, not quite red.

It's hard to tell in that pic what you ahve circled, but it looks liek the tranny ground wire to me. It should be behind one of the tranny bolts. It's common to be left hanging after somebody does your clutch they forget to put it back in. It should be behind one of the two or three bolts at the top of the bell housing where it goes into the block.

The speed sensor is at the back of the block. There is also a plug at the very front of the trans near the mount (passanger side headlight area) which you can unplug put some dielectric grease on and re-install.

Thanks,

My speedo does the same, it sometimes goes to 0 when i accelerate, but once i let off it catches up. Sometimes it just falls for no reason.

Which one is the one that goes to the gauge cluster, im pretty sure thats the one i need to replace or re-install.

Defiant, is that the one you circled?

Don't look for red. I believe it's black.

You'll have to reach down and get to it. I've got an auto also so I know it's there :)

It could be that the gear on the sensor is stripped and that means you'll have to try and find one from a junk yard.

just my .02 but my speedometer has been acting kinda crazy on mine because it just jumps rapidly all over the place it once pegged to 170 while i think i was doing 35 but once in a while it will work for a short period of time then do some more acrobats LOL anyways anybody know what could be wrong?

I pulled mine out (5spd) and it was cracked and fell apart. When I call Mitsu they say there is no speed sensor for manuals, just autos? They can find a speedometer gear for a manual but thats the part thats actually inside the tranny isnt it?

I found my speed snensor, but it was in perfect condition. Apparently, the plastic gear inside the tranny is broken...
