Will chunks from a disentegrating exh. manifold ruin a turbo?

Removed my cracked (what a shock huh?) exhaust manifold on my 1G turbo talon and inside where the two sides of the manifold become one I noticed that chunks of the manifold were falling off (like pellet/bb sized) I found two down in the turbo with a magnet.
The view into the turbo from above doesn't show any damage to the turbo wheel but I think I'm only seeing part a small portion of the wheel.

Would these metal chunks be pretty likely to toast a turbo?

yes most definatley, any metal shavinings or any foreing objects inside your turbo can couse major damage. it can ruin your turbos "pedals" and possibly bend or break your turbos "arm" where the turbo moves in and in the long run it could harm your engine too.

It's very possible. I don't think a turbo spinning at 100,000+ rpm would like them too much and they could likely start taking pieces out of the turbinel.

Have you ever heard of a manifold doing this before?
It almost looks like the manifold was "burned/dried"...sort of hard to describe. I was shocked to see the inside of the turbo (above the wheel) looks like lava flowed down it. Really rough, big seams(?), and very black.

yeah us 1g owners have mostly all seen it before. it mostly happens on just a 1g manifold w/ alot of miles and one that has been overheated. only the 1gs will do it tho.

Not on a DSM, but my Datsun 200SX Turbo kept shedding inner bits of manifold. Used to jam the turbo. I was about to replace it the first time, when I realized what I'd thought was a damaged blade was in fact a chunk of slag. I knocked it out with a punch, and the blades were undamaged. The next time it happened, I didn't even take it apart- I used a piece of steel rod to reach in and nudge the turbine in reverse, which cleared the slag again. I don't know why it didn't show some self-respect and blow up like it should have, but it never did. Who knows.

Thanks again for the info. Yep, looks like the manifold was overheated. It has got so many cracks I'm surprised it didn't come off in pieces.

Perfect opportunity to upgrade. Get an EvoIII manifold or a 2g one. They are better.
