medicine hat,
i have a 90 plymouth laser non-turbo , and was wondering first of all...if there is a crack in my exhaust manifold and it is falling appart...if any pieces can wreck the motor if they fell out...cause resently i was driving down the hiway...and it got alot louder than usual, i phoned my mechanic he said it was just another piece falling off, (we were in the middle of looking for a used one) so i continued to drive it.... later that week i was driving down the hiway and it got ALOT LOUDER...And then it sounded as if a piece fell into the motor..or somthing..a very loud ratling sound. The car had stalled, so i took it out of gear, the grinding sound stopped, ...after i took it to the mechanics he said i had cooked the motor,....

there was radiator fluid in the car before but it never boiled over after we had stopped the car and it was ready to tow there was radiator fluid dripping out but nothing boiling....and it never smelt like i had just overheated it but.....i still dont think i cooked it, was it because of the cracked exhaust manifold????? was it because it overheated?????...or was it just time for it to go?????(it had 260 thousand k's on it but was re-bult before i bought it)

now i need a new motor is 2100 canadian a good price for a used 2.0L motor with 92 thousand k's and comes witha fly wheel and 101 day warranty???...please help me as we've ordered the motor already...and any other tips to keep THIS motor going good, like using higher octane gas, and what type of oil to use, or just anyothe tips to keep my laser going good for years to come... thanx !!

can anyone please help me out????...its very important the motor will be in this week!! is it a good prices??? and have any of you heard if these motors rebuilt are anygood??? because my mechanic checked with some people that build them and they said that these motors wouldnt last very long after being rebuilt, in fact some company's refuse to rebuild them....the reason im asking is because i found a rebuilt motor for the same price as the used one....tell me what you would do!!!!

thanks, bnpimpn

Hello! Sorry this is late...I was just cruising around and saw this.

Anyway, I have over 500,000 km on my Talon, so Iv'e been lucky. But Iv'e been good to my baby too - here are some tips.

Change the oil. You have a used engine going in, I would assume the engine had non-synthetic oil before. Stay with regular non-synthetic oil. Changing can cause seal leaks. As long as the oil is changed on a regular basis (5,000 to 10,000 km) this is the best care.

Never load up the engine upon start up. Let the engine fully warm up before hitting the throttle hard. Nothing kills and engine faster that running at full throttle before it is warm.

Change coolant as needed. If unchecked, deposits can form on the inside of the block and trash the engine.

Change timing belts as needed. This engine requires that you do this - it seems to be more sensitive to belt life than some other engines.

These engines need proper care. A lot of engine shops no longer rebuild this engine because it requires special care and proper tools to assemble. A small block Chevy it isn't.

Good luck

Kyle

Not too much to my car/engine (a 1991 Talon five speed) , except as follows:
- Mobil 1 synthetic since the car was new.
- filter changed when the oil is changed
- boost increased to 15 psi, from 10.9
- removed lower honeycomb
- removed noise silencer
- K/N filtercharger
- clean throttle body once every six months

Thats about it!

oh cool thats REALLY good then!, you must take good care of your car for it to last so long!..so hey in your opinion would you have bought the rebuilt motor(not complete) for $2000 canadian or the used one with 93 thousand km's (came complete with everything alternator..fly wheel all that crap) for what ended up after shipping to be bout $2600??...

It sounds a little high but really not too bad.$2600 CDN is what, about $1800 US, so thats not too bad. I paid much more than that for the long block (close to $3000 US). You got a warranty to help you off, have tips on keeping things going; you should be all set!
