Great forums here, been reading the last two days straight but still lots of questions. Plan on doing some upgrades over the winter on a 1g, pretty much stock motor. Blew the head last race event so that is being rebuilt over the winter. Currently have a 255, 3" mandrel exhaust. I plan on installing a maft setup, fmic, and larger injectors at the least along with a new turbo. Not sure how to go about selecting it though. I'm FWD and HP goals for this coming year are around 300whp, with plans to go higher eventually. As far as turbo selection theres is almost too much info on here, i almost need a walkthrough from the start on how to decide between trim sizes, A/R, differences in them, pros/cons, etc. I've been looking at some of the t04b and t04e offered by bullseye but don't want to make an un-educated decision in which to go with and will leave room for higher goals in the future. Any input will help!
 
You should install 99 lifters for sure :)

Being first gen - you should decide on one big thing- turbine- either you are running T3 or TD05 based. Why? Because if you are going to go to T3 then you need to decide on a header. If you are running TD05 then you should probably upgrade to an EVO type Manifold.

Why the choice now for the turbine- because everything else is easier. Swapping from a T3 .48 to a .63 housing isn't a huge ordeal, neither is swapping the turbine wheel, or the comp side- it's deciding if you want a T3 back end or not. Likewise, you can run a 6cm2 TD05 or a 7cm2, or an 8cm2 or a freggin 10cm2 or a bullseye housing if you stick with MHI turbos. Swapping comp side is easy.

My advice would be decide where you are going to shoot- if you say 300HP is your goal, you can achieve that easy with either. You want to end up running say 125mph traps in the end? I think a T3 now would save you money later. Pick up a .48 A/R T3 setup- even if it's only a Super 60 T3 for now- you'll be closer to your 300HP goal- and if you decide you want more top end with a little more lee way in spool- swap out to the .63 A/R later on- T3 components are cheap. Then once you get the spool you like, work on the cold side.

Don't focus on how much boost, or your end HP- you can change that easily- changing the turbo is a lot easier than rebuying the manifolds, the downpipes, the oil and coolant lines the IC piping, the blah, blah...

Focus on supporting mods- clutch, fuel, engine management, IC... then on proprietary mods- piping, support lines, exhaust... then on the moving parts of the turbo last.

I'm working with a company so that the T3 swap is even easier- I think that given the cheapness of T3 based turbos, you'll end up ahead on a DSM if you MIGHT go that far, doing it upfront.

A T3 Super60 can be had for $100 used on Ebay, or $400 new - on an 8 valve 2.2L nearly 20 years ago, you could get 300WHP from them. Then you can upgrade the turbo as you have needs, moving to a T3/T4 CHRA and T4 comp side...
 
So what exactly is A/R and how does it affect things on both sides? And trim? Whats that all about and why chose which? As far as a T3 setup since its in a colt, theres very little room for clearace from the rad, and i'd rather not have to deal with changing the downpipe again or anything like that right now.
