Confused as hell :(

My cousin recent had an engine transplant done to his 1995 Eclipse non turbo 2.0L GS. The old engine died of oil starvation after the oil pan took on a put hole.

The situation is very strange with this new engine though. The engine itself seems to be the correct engine. I've seen pictures online of other 95 eclipse engines and his is the same. He had been complaining about a lack of power. I took the car for a drive, and lack of power is an understatement, you can hold the gas down all you want from a stop, it just doesn't move fast, the engine revs, the car moves, just not quick at all. So I started looking for the problem. I tested a few things, but to make a long story short here's the problem I found: There was a loose vacuum hose. Upon checking the vacuum diagrams, I found that this hose was supposed to be connected to the fuel pressure regulator. So I started the search for the fuel pressure regulator, an easy thing to find, however on his engine it's no where to be found. There is none. The fuel rail on his engine has no fuel pressure regulator, nor does it have a port for a fuel pressure regulator to connect onto. I continued my search for the fuel pressure regulator but ended my search when I found the fuel tank return line to be plugged up with a bolt. Obviously there is no fuel pressure regulator to be found on this car.

My theory is that the lack fuel regulation is causing the engine to flood with fuel and hence the severe lack of power. My other theory is that the fuel pump is on it's death bed from being through so much stress for months now (since the swap was done).

We went to a junkyard, to see if we could purchase the fuel rail, we found another 95 eclipse there, with the same engine as his, and guess what? It's fuel rail had the fuel pressure regulator exactly where it should be !! yayy. Too bad they wouldn't sell parts off the engine. So now we know for a fact that the fuel rail on the engine is incorrect, based on the loose vacuum hose, the plugged up fuel tank return line, and the junkyard engine that has a fuel pressure regulator.

I think the original and correct fuel rail was somehow damaged, and the mechanics who did the engine swap just didn't give a shit how they fixed it, so installing a wrong fuel rail wasn't a problem for them.

I thought that some of you could shed some light on this situation. On what engine or car can you find a fuel rail that fits the A588 engine, but does not have a fuel pressure regulator? The Dodge neon engine looks to be the answer, there is no fuel pressure regulator on the neon's rail, however the schraeder valve (test port) on the neon's fuel rail is in a different position on the fuel rail. Do any of you have any clues at to what car this rail may have come from?

Since we can't find second hand fuel rails for sale, and the new one is expensive (plus you have to buy the regulator seperately), do any of you know if the fuel rail off a 4g63(t) will fit the a588 engine? Do you guys know of any fuel rails that could be used as a substitute? Does anyone happen to know where I could purchase a a588 fuel rail relatively cheap (used preferably)?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts, thank you for any help you can provide.

sorry, I wouldn't know a a588 from a 420a. I'm pretty much in new territory here, being a nissan guy. I got the a588 code off another site when I was searching for parts.

Like you said. The mechanics didn't give a shit how they fixed it. It needs the fuel rail, FPR, etc.
