car stalls when put in gear

i start the car up and after a wee bit of hesitation it kicks over with no problem and idles find, as soon as i put in in reverse the RPM's drop to like 400-500 and stalls sometimes. Anybody know whats goin on

feel badly for me) i'm thinking it has something to do with the idle control, but it only does it when its from a cold start, if i drive it for awhile then start it and put it in gear, theres no problems

its a common 1g thing i guess
at least in the auto's it is
let it warm up

when i start it idles at around 1500 then drops about 30 seconds later to 800-900 if thats what you mean
