blown turbo???

hey everyone, so lately my car has been driving good, then tonight, i was on it a little and i saw a huge puff of white smoke behind me and my girl said when she was behind me it blew out more white smoke when i would shift, or be on it a little and it was boosting, my question is my turbo blown? or is it something worse, its a 14b turbo on a 97gst the turbo has been on there for about 3 years the previous owner said, i havent checked for shaft play since its dark yet, also if its blown, what turbos would i be able to get that are a direct replacement and bolt right on? thanks very much, sorry im a little new to turbo systems, thanks all much appreciated.
 
Dont assume the turbos blown. White smoke is usually a sign of coolant burning. Possibly a headgasket. Has the car overheated? Is their water in the oil? If so it will look milky or like peanut butter.

Does the turbo have excessive side to side play? If no on the above try cleaning out the intercooler piping and side mount. Sometimes oil with gather from blowby and you will notice smoke. Afterwards replace the PCV valve and see if that fixes it.

IF you remove the j pipe from the 14b and there is excessive OIL and side to side shaft play then yes the turbo is probably leaking.

IF you need to replace it I would recommend another 14b especially if your just learning about turbo setups and dont have supporting mods. You should be able to find them fairly cheap. I have just the snail listed for $50.00 plus shipping in the classifieds. The 14bs are pretty easy to find if you look and they are a good turbo.


But to answer your question the two most common replacements would be another 14b or 16g. If you go back with the t25 stocker (bad idea) you will have to replace the oil feed and oil return line.

Check everything rule out the possibilities and IF you need a turbo go back with the 14b

alright thanks for the help and suggestions, im gonna check for shaft play tom, and im thinking about upgrading to an EVOIII 16 g if this one is blown, im not sure yet though, its got a fmic, i dunno if the pipes are all full of oil or not, would the evo 3 16 g just bolt right up from everything from the 14b? thanks again all

Yes it will bolt up but you wont be satisified until you get enought mods to bump the boost up over 20psi.

I just put on the small 16g and it doesnt have noticeable gains over the 14b until around 18psi.

alright cool im thinking of just lookin for a 14b then if its blown, what all supporting mods would i need for the evo 3, injectors and some sort of tuning system? also about the tuning system, ive been curious to what ones would suit my car the best?safc or dsm link or something? im not really looking to go over 300 or 350 hp, just a nice reliable but fairly fast daily driver.
 
For the 16g at least injectors and DSMlink FTW.. Link is so much easier to use. Its a little more expensive at around $600.00 but your not as limited as you are with the SAFC. And with th SAFC you still need a wide band. Combine the two and you can get link.

Granted you still need an EPROM ecu but as the old question is asked what are you goals?

Sounds like your wanting the same as me a clean DD around the 350 mark. From the research Ive done I should be able to get there with some 660s a mild intake cam and tuning capabilites as Im already EPROM in the 95.


Just remember this be patient and do your homework it will save you money/headache in the future. Look around at home many peole are selling bolt on stuff in the classifieds thats nearly new or still in the box. They are cutting their losses because they switched plans mid game and now are losing money.

yeah im def not tryna over do anything and lose alot of money or have huge headaches about the choices i made about the car, whats an EPROM ecu? where woulld i get it? yeah a few ppl have been tellin me dsmlink would be the best tuning source also, and yeah ## goals sound similar to mine just a quick but reliable builld for a DD, thanks man again sorry for so many ?S
 
alright so it only puffs a little smoke hardly any just sitting there at idle, and when im letting off the gas or shifting, it will blow out a huge poof of white smoke. another thing is when i hear the turbo start spooling up and boosting there is another wierd sound coming along, it sounds like its coming from the turbo, because i only hear it when i start boosting, my question is where can i get a good condition 14b turbo? and not really expensive? and would it be hard to install myself? or should i get it installed by a professional? tonight when im off im gonna check for shaft play which im sure there is, and clean out all my innercooler piping. thanks all
