F4A33/W4A33=Automatic Turbo Tranny. "F4A" is the FWD and the "W4A" is the AWD. The F4A33 was also used in many Mitsu vehicles larger than the Eclipse and had the V6 attached to it.

"33" designates the power capacity.

Your tranny is prob the F5M22-1 manual NT-FWD tranny.

actually I have the "f5m3" which I'm guessing really means fm533. maybe the 22 is for the 1.8. hmm, I wonder if the 22 is lighter than the 33 and could be used in the 2.0...

The F4M22 and F5M22 were both non-turbo transmissions (automatic and manual, respectively), found in both the 1.8L and 2.0L 1G cars.

The turbo FWD models used F4M33 and F5M33 and, as stated above, the AWD models used W4M33 and W5M33.

NT trannies had higher final drive ratios to compensate for the lower torque output of the NT motors against a bit of a heavy 2600 LB chassis that they were installed in.

The 1.8 4G37 should have been upped to the 4G63 SOHC (the motor that dwelled in early Galants and their small pickups) to give adequate power for the weight of the chassis. It's just slightly underpowered in as well as light.

Fixed.

my REPLACEMENT tranny is the f5m33, but I just checked my original, broke tranny which is the f5m22, appropriate for the n/t, so I guess I have a lower fifth gear now than am supposed to. So that would be better gas mileage at higher speeds no?
