OK, I just got the lower end of my car rebuilt with new timing belt and pulleys. Got the car running and driving. It idled perfect and ran perfect. I had to go to work so I drove it too work (3 miles) and I forgot to put gear oil in so after work (5 hours later) I go outside and put gear oil in and tried to leave after that, the car idled rough and died, if I don't keep my foot on the gas. Looked at the plugs and they have some oil on the threads from oil leaking down the wells. I put different plugs in and it idles and stalls the same way. I just don't see how a car can drive so perfect then go to work and go back outside to leave and it doesn't run right. Anybody have any idea what might have happened?

Just to better understand your question, please answer the following;

When you say gear oil, do you mean engine oil?
When you say you drove the car after the rebuild without gear oil, do you mean that you never put oil in it after the rebuild?

^ +1 to that. I don't see you putting in trans oil in the parking lot. So if you mean engine oil, your engine is likely toast.

Well, maybe he put 5 quarts of transmission oil in his engine. :D

I'm not sure what would be worse. No oil or 90w oil. LOL

That would explain the rough idle though. The engine would be weighed down by that thick of oil. But driving 3 miles bone dry will definitely do some serious damage to the engine.

I put GEAR OIL in the TRANSMISSION, while being parked in a parking lot. Had a friend take me to the store and i came back and jacked it up and put it in...

:thumb:

So that probably has nothing to do with the idle

Is your CEL light illuminated?

Have you made sure all your sensors are plugged in and that you have no obvious boost leaks?

I would do a boost-leak test.

I checked everything multiple times, no check engine light. I have a vacume/boost gauge and while giving the car gas to keep it from dieing, the needle moves towards 20 on vaccum and when lettin off the gas it moves back to the 0 then it dies.

Back from the dead to answer this old thread that might help someone out later on. My fuel rail had been torqued down to much and cracked after just a few miles of driving. RESOLVED!!
