What is the purpose of the Capacitor (Noise Filter) in the 2G turbo engine bay and can the car run fine without it?

Yes, if unplugged the engine will still run normally but you may get the radio noise (depending on how good the radio filters it out both in it's power and through it's antenna) or noise in other sensitive equipment. It's case mounting must be clamped to bare metal since that is the negative. It's positive lead needs to be connected as close as possible to the coil's primary to be effective. A bad capacitor will either be blown out due to an internal short or it lost it's capacitance. Either way it will act as if it's not there. A blown out due to internal short one happens so fast that it usually won't even blow a fuse. It then instantly is not a short anymore (nor has capacitance).

Thanks 007jimmy for clearing that up for me. If I include it in my stereo equipment, what size capacitor should I get?

Are you talking about a capacitor (looks like a large battery with a voltage display on it) that is used in aftermarket stereo systems or the capacitor (small 1 wire metal tube) that is in the engine bay bolted to the intake manni? The one in the engine bay is used for noise filtering and the larger capacitors commonly found wired in with aftermarket sub/stereo setups help with the lights dimming/power drain that large stereo setups draw. Not the same thing.

When i had a bridged 1000w amp i used a 1 farad capacitor to help with the power draw to my dual 15inch subs.

I don't plan to have a hi powered massive sound system but the metal cylinder capacitor in the engine bay was removed. Now that I think about it, I would like to run at least one 12" sub though.
