I have a 98 eclipse rs as a daily driver with 144,xxx miles and plan to rebuild the motor but don't want to spend an outrageous amount on parts but don't want to buy cheap parts that are going to break. I don't know where to look and am confused I have a budget of 1000 dollars to spend on parts and machining if necessary. Thanks for the help ahead of time

So everything oem. Should I go to autozone or advanced autos for them. What about timing belt and headgasket, them too oem

If your rebuilding the motor then yea mine as well get new timing and head gasket. OEM too enless you have turbo dreams then just go OEM

First off, is there any particular reson you need to rebuild the motor (like a rod knock) or do you simply want to freshen up the motor? If the latter is the case then you should consult the service manual so that have a list of engine specifcations and then measure everything. If it within spec then reuse it if not then you will have to replace it. name brand parts are not always expensive and they are sometimes cheaper and better than OEM parts. In addition to a local part store i would also look online. And dont hesitate to ask questions.

Yeah i just simply want to freshen the motor up it burns oil like a champ and I noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust. So i figured if I'm going to have the head off why not just pull the motor out and rebuild the whole thing LOL

$1000 budget is tight.... you will have to do most all the work yourself.

I hope the cylinders in the block show min wear and are still round. Being that your N/T the chances are good, same for the crank being in decent shape.

If the cylinder bores are good, the pistons should be too.

Your parts list should be about like this..

Full gasket set
Rings
Rod bearings
Main bearings
BSE (opt)
Timing belt kit
Water pump
Oil pump ( inspect your oe, replace if needed)

Machine work
Block= Clean and inspect
Crank=Clean and inspect (polish?)
Rods= Big ends checked
Pistons= mic'ed for size

Head work is what can cost, depending what you want and what the head needs. figure at a min, clean, vacuume test seats and install new seals. Maybe a surface.

Things needed for install
oil and filter
PS fluid
Anti-freeze
Thermastat
Belts and hoses as needed
Rad flush
Paint
sealent=RTV
Brake cleaner
Blue paper towels
Clutch? inspect and change if needed
spark plugs
plug wires
WD40

That is a good basic list to start with, it is the odds and ends that will nickle and dime you to death.

Hey thanks dsm wiseman that's the part that was confusing all of the parts that I need. I just recently did a valve cover gasket and from what I could see there it looked like a healthy top end but that's from what I could see and that's not much. Oh and this isn't my first dsm so i know all about nickel and diming LOL.

Nowhere in the list for "Things needed for install" did I see beer. This is a required item when doing most of the work yourself or for luring unsuspecting helpers :sneaky: under the car!

Sorry.... But I am not much of a drinker, and I believe that a buzzed/drunk mechanic is not a good one... Things get over looked and forgotten.

I understand you said this in jest.. but all is good! :rocks:

Haha yeah that is a requirement but I guess dsm wiseman is right stuff will get overlooked/forgotten especially if I'm drunk LOL

Yeah once I have one ill want another but I actually prefer to be sober when working on the car

it looks like BogusSVO has a good list going for ya. the only thing I would suggest different is to go ahead and replace the oil pump. Its too risky, I have had seemingly good pumps fail on me only after a few hundred miles :ohdamn:. You could look on Amazon.com or rock auto for some deal on the parts you need like this for example http://www.amazon.com/Victor-Reinz-Engine-Gasket-953457VR/dp/B000CLCG36/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340212125&sr=8-2&keywords=95-3457VR. When I do an engine rebuild myself I measure eveything like cylinder roundness and taper, main bearing journal alignment as well as roundness and taper, all of the rod bearing journals as well, I measure the crank, valve guides, heck I have a whole procedure I go through each time so that i can make sure that a part is ok for reuse and to determine if something needs machined or not. The more you measure/inspect/check the cheaper the rebuild will be (but it will take longer). I have seen some good videos on youtube of guys showing how to measure engine components and blocks etc. Its hard to say how much the rebuild is going to cost until you tear the motor apart and check everything.

recently did a basic rebuild in my kitchen, so 1000 is very resonable, just do your research. id get as many new bolts as you can. All new gaskets and arp head bolts. stmdsm.com or rockauto.com. Also look into balance shaft elim. saves of future problems and makes timing easier. if your doing anything to the head id go with 3g revised lifters so no headaches in ticking :) good luck its fun
