Found a thread like this search, but dont quite get what it was saying......I have made progress, I have 1st 2nd and 3rd back, but they are sloppy and grindy 4th 5th and r are no gos so far. Trying to figure our how the levers on top of tranny relate to gears.....the right lever (looking into the car from front) moves up and down (i cant tell how many positions since it will not lock into any)....the left has 3 positions.....towards the firewall, towards the front end, and a center position which always appears to be neutral. How do these positions relate to gears? My right lever appears to be the issue....when raised by hand it will not hold any position at all, and always sinks back into trans to lowest position pulling the shifter along with it. at its highest position which appears to be the higher gears, the left lever will not engage. I did not have any issues with higher gears, my problem has always been the lower ones. and when my cable broke I was shifting into 2nd, so I dont get the issue with higher gears ..........

Your right lever viewed from engine front that goes up/down (which is your gear shift lever left/right) is called the select lever. It selects the shift gear pair - either 1-2, or 3-4, or 5-R. The other lever called the shift lever, selects which one of the pair is selected.

Take a look at the "select lever shoe" which is attached to the select lever and rides in the ring of the control shaft (so it can move it up/down) to see if it is missing or severely worn down: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/mai...t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.html#post152266167. If so it is probably your problem.

Thanks thats pretty much how I thought it worked just wanted to be sure ...the shoe was broken I fabbed up a new one from aluminum, but i think its still a little sloppy.....maybe Ill mill out a better one and try again...i was wonder how little tolerance there was in the fitment of the shoe...thanks!

yup, already done...found it on caps right after my last post and ordered 3 of them, they are only a couple bucks...thanks for the info...youd think there would be a little more room for slop in a plastic piece with that much wear or breakage potential, but I guess not. Hopefully this gets me at least as good as it was before the cable broke. Im daily driving my Porsche 944 to work at this point, and winter in Ohio is not exactly the optimum time for that.....
