What are the best spark plugs for the 420a motor? And what motor oil do you recommended

I just got NGK plugs and they are very nice. I won't use anything else for now on. their part number is BKR6E-11. As for oil I reccomend Castrol GTX 5-30 for conventional if ya want synthetic Royal purple is good I hear.

For my GS (DD) I always get the NGK BKR6E plugs and gap them to .045", it comes to about $8 from any car parts store. They ARE NOT pre-gapped either, so before installing them you'll want to check each one.

What kind of plugs you need depends completely on the application you are setting up to run, for instance if your going to run n/a then you can run a hotter plug than you could if your planning on running a turbo or nos. If your planning on running nos then you want colder plugs then a n/a engine would run. If you plan on running n/a then I would recomend that you run some iridium plugs, the best ones are being made by NGK right now. if you planning on running turbo then I would recomend that you run some 4point platnium plugs, best bet is still NGK.

you should never put platnum+4 plugs on a turbo car....i wouldn't recomended it....I've used them before and the accelaration on the turbo cars are pretty slow....
I'm using NGK Iridium Spark Plugs right now....works great :thumb:

:ohdamn:

VERY bad advice... the PO of my car said he had just put new plugs in, I didn't pay attention to it until the car started to spit and sputter, pulled the plugs and he had put NGK platinum's in it. I swapped them for the standard copper plugs and the problem went away immediately and hasn't returned in the slightest bit.

Platinum's are a bad idea for these cars :nono:

My mistake, I was always told that turbocharging = lower heat wanted as well, friends have said their cars run better with those on their turbos

Why copper core plugs are always recommended is that the rare earth metal plugs (platinum and iridium) are horrible conducters of electricity where copper is highly conductive to electricity which gives you the best spark.

Those rare earth metal plugs are mainly for owners who either don't care about spark plug maintainence and want to keep plugs in for 8 years before changing them out, or don't know what an engine is and that section is for the shop mechanics to fuss with.

..for my turbo I'm using NGK's BPR6EY (grooved electrode) plugs for a fatter spark... for the 1.8, it's using BPR6ES-11's

...why there are plenty of choices of plug manufacturers to use that does the same application.

You can even use Autolite 63's and gap them for NT use at .044, or gap them down to .028 for turbo use...

...just that Mitsu, Honda, and some others (Toyota is a DENSO user) over in Japan designed their motors (even Japanese motorbikes like Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki runs NGK's as stock plugs) to run best with NGK's - why a lot of us love using NGK's and why we use them also..so, why disturb a good thing?

Well guys, I purchased a brnad new set of 4 NGK V-Power spark plugs and a brand new set of Duralast lifetime warranty spark plug wires for a total of just $33.35 at Autozone. Fires up better than it ever has with me. I appreciate the ideas everyone. Thanks.

I'm getting ready to change my spark plugs in my non turbo (420a). Car is basically stock, cai and cat back. I'll be using NGK BKR6E's. Is it worth going to the GP platinum's? Cost isn't a factor. Also, what should the gap be on these?
Thanks

I'm not sure the part number since it's been over a year since my 98 eclipse was running, but I always ran NGK Iridium that my local parts house kept in Stock and never had any issues. And if I remember correctly I think the gap was like .45 or around that area. My 420a was completely bone stock but I don't think yours would need a different gap than factory.

This is what I am using. On a stock ish motor it's not worth the extra money. You won't see any gains.

Personally, I do not like to run cheap parts in my cars, so even though my spyder is stock right now, when the time comes to change the plugs and wites, I will pony up a little more cash for tried and tested brands. On my spyder the gap is .40, and I believe yours would be about .5, give or take.
