Ok so I've spent hours looking here and other sites trying to find information specifically for the SOHC 4g64.

My issue is this, I just replaced my timing belt, pulleys and crank sensor. Everything to me seemed to line up with the timing marks. And yes I followed every write up I could find dealing with timing and even have the Haynes manual highlighted with everything I would need to know.

Here is the issue, I crank it over the 6 times, marks lined up. Now I go to start the car, it starts up right away, but it has this louder then normal tick. Constant with the idle. I had it running for about 3 seconds then I shut it off thinking it was the piston valve clap. But I've heard that before and been there before with my 95 GS. It didn't sound like that.

Now my question is this, when the timing marks line up each time what is happening within the motor? The cam mark on the valve cover lines up, what is it doing inside? I hope this isn't confusing anyone.

Anyway, hopefully someone has an idea of what I may have done wrong. Or unless since its been sitting a month or so would the ticking be that constant and loud?

Thanks to anyone who can help. Just remember its the 4g64 SOHC. I know SOHC's are supposed to be alot easier to time but I am so confused!

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking so I'm just going to guess.

The cam will make 1 revolution for every 2 revolutions of the crank, so every timing mark should line up every second revolution of the crankshaft on a SOHC engine. If it is doing anything different then the timing is wrong. If you're not sure of your timing marks, you can double check them by pulling the valve cover and the spark plugs, then use a dowel in the spark plug hole to determine piston position while watching the valve events for that cylinder, but that's sorta redundant, if you wanted to get that technical and be certain it's timed perfectly you'd be using a degree wheel and a dial indicator already.

Also, the SOHC head uses hydraulic lash adjusters just like the turbo DOHC head. When they sit long enough they tend to tick a little louder until they get refreshed with a tad more oil pressure. If it doesn't go away after a few days of normal driving you might want to consider cleaning them or upgrading.

Ahhh, it's starting to make sense.Thank you, Thank you!
I will try the wood dowel trick. And yes that is basically what I was asking about the revolutions and all.

Lash adjusters huh? So how would I determine if its the lash adjusters making a racket or something else? Other then rechecking the timing marks and making sure the tensioner is right. Like I said the car starts just fine, but its the loud ticking that's getting me.

I will try this soon as possible and post what I find.
Once again thank you!!
