Im looking for a great mechanic in the IE area to rebuild my motor. Im going to take it out of the car and drive it to the shop. I need both the engine and trany rebuilt. Any help is appreciated.

the engine has about 180,000 miles on it. I would like to get it looked at and see if it is worth rebuilding. If it is i want to replace all seals and gaskets, get the block machined and put in new rods and pistons. I also want the transmission to be checked out and rebuilt if possible. The Turbo is done so i need to replace that. I want the engine to able to handle 350-400 HP. Like i mentioned i am taking out and reinstalling the motor, so i would take it out to you. Chino is about 1 1/2 hours away from me.

Of course its worth rebuilding! Just because it has alot of miles doesn't mean anything. The only thing is it might be more cost effective to get another block IF your block needs alot of machine work! Do you know what kind of rods and pistons you want or plan on getting/running? For 350-400hp its not nec. but I would still recommend ARP rod/main/and head studs. They do cost more, but well worth it, especially if you ever plan to make more hp. Sounds like your looking for a basic rebuild, which is great. Whats wrong with your turbo, I can rebuild those as well so maybe yours is saveable and if your transmission is manual I can look at that too, autos aren't really my strong point.

There is a lot of shaft play on the turbo, but i was looking into upgrading it to a bigger turbo. The transmission is a 5spd, and it does need work. I just want it set up to be a daily driver with balls, i will be doing a lot of work on the car while the engine is out so there wont really be any time constraint. I have the basic skills to remove the engine, but i dont trust my self in breaking it open and doing all the internal work. I was thinking of picking up a ebay rebuild kit with the topline pistons, but i have heard mixed reviews on those. If you trust ARP then we will go with ARP. If you have any toughts or suggestions let me know. I am looking into getting this project started withing the next 6 weeks before i leave on vacation.

Is it a stock turbo? If yes then, not worth the rebuild! You could hit 350-400hp with a new rings and bearings with a ball hone and a 16g with GOOD supporting mods, but the new thing is the holset, which spool a little bit slower than the 16g but make really good power. Any idea what turbo you might go with? I personally havn't used topline but people have so you can read up and make your choice. The only things I would REALLY like to see you do, is get all OEM timing componets, OEM front case/oil pump, oem head gasket and at least ARP head studs. Its really hard to say this engine will make x amount of hp and be reliable without knowing what you want to put into this, (money and parts). If your using your 160,000 mile block, the machine shop will hot tank block, deck the block and put new freeze plugs in, bore and hone the cylinders .020 and depending on the mainline (if bad-aline hone). If it needs an a line hone, might want to consider new block which what I mentioned in previous post. Do you have a parts list yet of what your thinking/wanting?

Im about to start piecing everything together. Im new to 4g63's and turbo's, so i appreciate your input on wich route to take. If you could give me a list of what parts i need to put together to get the rebuild started i would appreciate it. It is a stock turbo, and the 16g seems popular in the DSM community, so i was thinking of going with that one. I appreciate the insight.

Alot depends on what the machine shop says, but basing off 160k engine, I'm going to say you will need
Pistons, Rings, bearings, engine seal and gasket kit, oil pick up tube, oem oil pump front case, balance shaft eliminator kit, complete oem timing belt kit, oem head gasket, arp head studs, 16g install kit (hard lines for turbo), and up to you waterpump. That should be it I believe.

Awsome, i will start chasing parts and i will give you a heads up in time. Im going to try and piece everything together before i leave on vacation, but more than likely i will not have everything together until early september.
