A guy with a NA wanted to put a 3" exhaust on his car. I said it was stupid and started searching to show him why. I came across this. Now I know theres alot of these floating around so let me know if it's already been postd on here.

Yes that's been posted, lots, even debated.

My car was dumping at the downpipe, then I got a 2 and a half inch exhaust, ran AMAZING.

So yeah. People are still going to debate this.
 
Yea, this discussion isn't proved in favor of either way. I have seen write-ups debating both ways and came across this. I havent read this one personally upon discovering it so thought I'd ask. Thanks though.
 
Some of the things said on there does kinda make since, all though my friend with an Sti had a small exhaust on it then we switched it with an 2 1/2 cat back it did add alot more kick to it.
 
I'd say the article is pretty well-written. Only thing I don't agree with is the heat issue when comparing N/A to FI. N/A's run static compression, while FI compression is based on boost, as such fuel + gas + compression + spark = heat, and with increased boost you have more fuel and air, thereby increasing compression which should in turn make FI produce more heat. Not to mention when the exhaust gases hit the turbo's impeller, it's causes minor compression of the gas which will cause more heat, though rather minutely.

Other than that, it's a nice little article. Lofty, assuming your car then was still your 94 N/A, the reason your car ran better with an exhaust than with it dumping at the downpipe is due to the loss of scavenging (or "the exhaust pulse" as the article calls it). N/A's make low-end power via scavenging, and that can only be produced via an exhaust, so without one your car will run poorly, even when compared to a slightly over-sized exhaust.
