so i got pulled over tonight for my headlights because the cop said they were illegal but wouldnt tell me why he just kept telling me they are illegal now with that said i have a 12k hid kit in my car and there bright dont get me wrong but i have seen bmw's and new lexus' with brighter headlights then mine and no other cop has bothered me about them so can someone please enlighten me on why they are illegal or send me a link of the document for the pa headlight law

they are illegal on cars that do NOT come from the factory that way.

Yeah they are illegal.Any car that didnt have factory HID's isnt supposed to have them.I think its because a factory car has a projector housing so that the light wont glare all over and blind people.Why 1200k's? I have 6000k's and have not been bothered once.They are white with just a hint of blue.I think anything over 6 the color of the light just tells cops come get me .Sorry get a ticket?

no i didnt get a ticket i just got a 10 day card meaning i have to go within 10 days to the station and show them its fixed so ill just throw the stock bulbs in tomorrow go show them its changed then go back home and put my hid's in i was a little ways from home about 2 or 3 townships over and its the only cop thats been that redic about them in the 3 months ive had them

I have aquired a deep hatred of those that put really bright hids in their cars without the proper projectors. HIDs are unnecessary in the cars they come in from the factory, much less every kids' car that thinks its cool. I wish the fed would make them illegal completely.

Thats good that you didnt get a ticket...Sounds like you have a plan.If you keep getting pulled over just buy some bulbs in the 4-6k range and hopefully they cant tell.

yea i was just upset cause they were being jerks about it and wanted to search my car and said i didnt need to be out this late and that i tried to ditch them by driving around and i pulled into the gas station and they didnt understand why i went they way i did and that i was suspitiously driving around (i work at a bar and i was coming home from the gym its 3am my time i got pulled over at 130)

Ha thats bullshit I'm almost 20 and I think that my car must just say come get me.I get dumb shit like this to happen to me all the time when I'm out driving.It's so bad my friends say I'm like a crackhead I see a cop and I'm like oh shit I'm getting pulled over and I dont do shit but I do get pulled over most the time. Since I have had the DSM a little over a year maybe longer idk I have been pulled over 14 times but I talked my way through it all and never got a ticket yet! Purple HID's are the new underbody neons. All the ricers gotta have 'em.

You got pulled over because your purple lights are annoying to oncoming drivers and are worse at lighting the road in front of you than your stock lights. You want a real performance upgrade that actually works? Do a true retrofit with projectors and some 5-6000k HID bulbs and high quality OEM ballasts.

Southpark should have lumped cheapo HID guys in with the Harley guys in the f-a-g episode.

Cops arent idiots these days, they know what belongs and what doesnt. They know what HIDs in stock non-projector housings looks like as its coming at them, especially if you are running a super blue or purple HID that only come on high-end BMW, Acura, Mercedes, Etc and guess what, an Eclipse doesnt qualify.

i would seriously consider HID'ing down to a lesser value to avoid hassle. Dress like the devil, and you get the horns. Stuff like this, fart can mufflers, CF hoods, all tell an officer you modify your vehicle and are all types of mods that are just begging to get you pulled over.

FWIW the higher the temp. the lower the light output. Like it was mentioned above, stick around 6000k. My wifes Lexus has 4700k stock.

some laws can be ridiculous. in il it is illegal to have any aftermarket exhaust louder than stock. imagine trying to modify a car with that law. ive never been particularly bothered by it, but i know a bunch of people who get pulled over weekly.

if i remember correctly, sema SAN fought pretty against it. not sure how big of an impact they mad as it is still illegal.

at least tints are legal to an extent in il now.

To the OP: Put stock bulbs back in, and sell the HIDs. If you just swap them to get out of the ticket, then put the HIDs back in, that same cop WILL recognize you when he sees you again. And he WILL be pissed. That's my opinion. The HIDs serve NO PURPOSE. Except to break the law. I bet you're not moving anytime soon, and that cop ain't goin' nowhere, either.
I got a 92 GS-T recently. I've spent more money than the car is worth trying to un-modify it. Why? So I can drive to the GF's house at night and not get arrested! I had to replace the murdered-out lights with stock, and the fart-can had to go in favor of an actual muffler. The triple guage pod made me look like a Paul Walker wanna-be, plus it messed with the seat-belts. I've still got a little ways to go: I need a new hood to replace the one it's got that has scoops cut in it and pins to hold it shut. And my windshield is cracked.
I'll be 34 next month, and I've lived in the same town since before I could drive. I've developed a bit of a feel for what is likely to get the attention of the local authorities. I'm a total hippy, but I keep my hair cut short. And there will never be Phish, Grateful Dead, or any other stickers on my car. I like my car to look as stock as possible. Why? Because getting arrested SUCKS! Whether we're speeding, drinking, or carrying, or driving an illegal car, most of us are probably up to at least something mildly illegal. There's no reason to draw attention.

Anyone who runs higher than 6k HIDs are noticeable. They have an obvious tint, and DO NOT look OEM and a reason to get pulled over.

I can't imagine 12,000k lights produce a light I'd want to drive with. I can see this for a show car, but not for something that's actually used on the road. The output has to be horrible compared to a typical HID bulb (4300k or so).

I'd say sell them and get some Silverstars to avoid the cops and get some better light output.
