I was driving back to school from home today, its only a 50min drive when doing 75 mph. I was 25 miles into my trip and it was raining a little bit, when my car started shuddering and swerving all by itself.

I force her over to the roadside, left her running, new it wasnt power train, since she was actually running mint, idling fine and there were no noises what so ever.

I was thinking, damn it, i have a flat tire.

I got out walked around the car a few times, and didnt notice anything unusual, all the wheels were straight and had air, then i saw it...

...there was ONE lug nut holding my front wheel on. It just so happened to be my lock nut. WTF

Two weeks ago me and my dad put my winter wheels/tires on since the weather was changing. I KNOW these lugs were tight and torqued down.

There arent any issues with my alignment, or front suspension, so i doubt they wobbled loose.

You guys think someone was trying to be funny by taking my lugs off or something, or loosening them a little??

Also, i was trying to find the thread, from a long time ago, about the movie with the tuner sports car that was racing all the V8's in town, and it would vanish at times...or something...idk its an old movie...ive had a long day guys so if i sound delusional, my bad.

I had the exact same thing happen on my first DSM years ago. Drove 30 miles and it felt funny... got to work and noticed I only had one lug nut left on. I can tell you with 100% certainty that they were all torqued down good.

Holy crap, I thought the expression, "Yeah, just make sure you check your lugnuts from now on". Was just a creepy thing to say to someone, to creep them out. To think someone actually did it (which would have to be what happened).......The first 4 that loosened kept pressure on the 5th, and luckily the pressure held and you figured it out. Do you have any enemies, do you park your car on the street? I would do a visual inspection for awhile. I'd say it may have been a one-time deal by some punk kids, but surveillance is an option. Happy to hear you and your dsm are alright.

Edit: I think I'm gonna check my lugs tomorrow :) As Red97Eclipseboy said tho, it may have been a part fail.

The movie, was it "The Wraith", with charlie sheen?

OMG THANK YOU!! :thumb:

Also, they werent tuner style lugs, i was using the stock lugs with a lock lug nut. I do know you have to re-torque after a short drive, and i did that...two weeks ago...hmmm

inick2005i - Yeah man, i think im going to start doing it as well.

So i went outside to re-tighten my lugs, because i need to drive to work...low and behold, two lug studs broke off....FML.

ugh, i need a vacation.

Did you actually use a torque stick or a torque wrench? If not they probably just wobbled loose. IMO the #1 important place to always use a torque wrench is on lug nuts. #2 is engine internals.

Now just wait until one day when I'm feeling lazy and I don't actually do this in front of another dsmer and they quote this post to me...

No i didnt use a torque wrench, ive always just tightened them with my strength, ive never had a problem like this before, when doing that.

One of my friends thinks i may have over-tightened them.

Can anyone point me to a section or thread on how to replace lug studs?

Yes you should always torque your lug-nuts i've lost a tire & rim before on my old F-150 thank's to Sam's Club not do there job i didn't even get out of the parking lot but they rectified their mistake the worst was i had a lift on my truck & the rim & tire that came off was the front driver's & because of the drop to the pavement put a hair line crack in the frame right behind the steering box which shortly after broke entirely & luckly nobody was hurt but Sam's Club was at fault & they manned up.

ill bet that all or most of your lug studs are bent, you might as well replace them all. Also, some rims, just dont except our stock dsm lugs, Unless for winter you put on stock dsm rims, but if you went with another rims, then the taper of the stock lug nuts are too wide oor too narrow to seat correctly on the rim. Get gorilla locking lugs, best lug ever. The bit that comes with it attaches to your 4-way wrench or whatever you use. I use the bit with my torque wrench and a 13/16 socket.

Depending on how long you drove with one lug nut you might want to look into a wheel bearing as well. I believe the only way to replace them is hub assembly which comes with all new studs as well.

The only way you can get them from a parts store for a 2g is hub assembly. 1g's are a little different I'll check on the computer at work tonight and see if hub assemblies are available for them.

You wouldn't necessarily need a new hub if you can somehow remove the broken studs from the hub. It probably isn't worth the trouble removing them, and if it were my car I would replace the whole hub. Get that dsm fixed! It's going to start snowing here. LOL

FYI Rockauto has them for $75.

To replace your lug studs take off your brake caliper and rotor, then hit the stud with a sledge hammer and they will come out of the back. When you put in the new ones i recommend getting one open-face lug nut (99 cents) and put it on the stud and tighten it down before you put the rim on so you know they are seated well inside the hub. It's easiest with an impact wrench. You want them to be tight but don't break them again. Once the stud is in the hub just put it all back together and your good to go. If you've ever changed break pads then you can do this.

Awesome, Thanks for the info guys.

Like big_d said, its going to start snowing here, so i may just replace the studs like southrneclipser said since im not going to have a lot of time coming up.

big_d - thanks for the part info :thumb:
