Im going to vent a bit.

Well if you folks have seen my other thread about hondas being so reliable then this is another vent from that same Honda.

We got the vehicle last friday. Good running little car. Until the Radiator took a dump:notgood:

I changed that out tuesday and the old radiator was trashed big hole in it. No wonder why the stop leak didnt work worth a crap.

As I said I changed it out, bout a one hour job wasnt too hard. I filled her up with coolant 50/50 mix and let her idle for about 45 mins to burp the air bubbles out while squishing the upper and lower hoses. (which are new also)


well today My fiance was on her way to Iowa City (1 hour drive) and the vehicle got hot agian.

It built up so much pressure it blew off the overflow cap.

She said the vehicle wouldnt start and sounded like the motor was turning over fast. :notgood: my first thoughts were the timing belt snapped and that has a zero tolerance head.

Well the guy she bought it from just picked her up and topped her off with coolant and started the vehicle. He seems to think the head gasket is bad. I asked him to check the oil and it was fine not milky at all. The vehicle didnt smoke so my thoughts are the head gasket is still fine. (with out a leakdown or compression test)

I know the fans work tested them myself waited for the temp to get up to normal they kicked on. I tried the a/c they kicked on agian.

My only guess is the water pump might be going bad.

Im so pissed and im done venting. the only thing is she is an hour away from me and I feel helpless.
 
Have you checked the thermostat? It may have failed the first time the rad went.
 
change the rad cap to hold the right pressure inside the cooling system.. also if the hoses get really hot maybe the pump is ok? themostat too.. cheap stuff first
 
I feel better now. I let the car run for about 45mins trying to burp it but apparently I didnt burp it all the way. everything is okay now. ehh I still hate hondas.
 
I see you live in iowa so that means it gets cold. If you replace the thermostat get a stainless steel one so you wont ever have to worry about it sticking close/ open. ALso stop leak, when used in excess, clogs the BEJESUS out of a radiator. Just for the record, this has nothing to do with honda being "unreliable". People make cars unreliable. My crx has 240,000 and runs strong, and has never let me down.

Dude The radiator had a hole in it and that was a band aid to get 30 miles home.

I have a new radiator with a coolant flush. that I did the 2 days after the first time so Its not the stop leak.

it just needed burped like lofty said with a crow bar or a dump truck.
 
Please keep that stop leak sh_t out of any car.
I Could see if your throwing it in your radiator to make it to your wife who is in labor, but for all other non emergencies please refrain from snake oils.

What's next? Oh..Fuel Injector cleaner that your pour in your gas tank?:confused:WTF
So it mysteriously doesn't start cleaning all that other crap in the lines until the first few drops get into the injector. Yep, then it starts cleaning. :D

No, Dude I know what your trying to get at. I was 30 miles from home and I dont have 150-200 dollars to pay for a tow and wait until midnight for them to come and get me. When I have to be at work at 5 am.

It wasnt just the radiator the head has a crack in it so they have to put on a new head + timing belt and water pump.

I used that as a band aid and I know better.

Im not a 16 year old kid that knows nothing about cars.
 
I hate cooling systems that don't vent themselves.

Here's how I solve the issue....no matter what kind of car it is, drill two 1/16" holes at opposite ends of the thermostat sealing ring. It allows just enough coolant to pass through to never allow an air pocket, yet doesn't flow enough coolant to increase the time needed for a proper warm-up.

This works ESPECIALLY well on systems where the thermostat is significantly higher than the radiator, or where the thermostat is mounted sideways.
 
If you do much in coolant related stuff get one of these. They are freakin sweet. Just put it on with the correct adapter and fill it part way up with coolant. As the car warms up the coolant in the funnel rises then the thermostat opens and it all rushes in. Easiest way to burp an engine. It puts the level of the coolant above the engine. Can also help you diagnose a leaking headgasket. You can get one from the SK tool guy or just google it. Understandable, If $ permits in the future, get AAA. I have Four free tows a year where they'll tow up to 100miles, even if i run out of gas they'll bring me some free of charge.
I believe i have the gold service, where as i believe you can get platinum with unlimited towing for the avid person who loves to beat the crap out of their car on the streets.

Small side note is yeah i know what your talking about waiting for the tow to come. I sat in my car freezing(18*F) till my friend came and just sat in his car till the truck came (~1hr). This was when my bell housing bolts mysteriously disappeared.WTF

How did the head manage to crack?
 
Your guess is as good as mine. Im not sure. The op has the funnel pic a Buddie of mine had that but he was at work and I couldnt use it. But It didnt matter since the head was cracked.

The weird deal is the old radiator was bad so I figured that was the problem.

I think a head from Danger Zone is like $700. I know you dont find too many of those 2002 hondas with the 1.7 litre in the junk yards around here.

This is also my Fiances car. She traded her Volvo off on this 3 days before all these problems.

Her Volvo's turbo went bad because she didnt think it was a good idea to check her oil.

oh well Im not paying for it.
 
Ebay, hopefully it isn't a popular head people use for modifications.

+1 Owning a DSM should come with an automatic coupon for AAA. It has saved my marriage and my DSM on more than one occassion.
