I have a 97 gsx with 59k on the odometer. Over the winter I did a COMPLETE trans rebuild, and I just picked up a 6 bolt that I'm taking to the machine shop for boring and I'm putting in JE pistons and Eagle rods. I'm also replacing all the seals and bearings and I already had a 1g head I was building up. Basically everything will be brand new. I'm just wondering is it illegal to reset the odometer to 0000? I want to do this just because it would be kind of cool to see those numbers on this car instead of 60k after a complete rebuilt. Afterall it will be brand new .... is it ok or not?

why wouold it matter if you had a rebuilt motor, its still illegal but very easy to do;) :shhh:

well for "informational purposes only" how do you reset it to 000,000 without breaking anything? i was wondering about this the other day... i'm going through a complete motor rebuild myself and am not getting rid of the car anytime soon..

ha ha, I did the same thing, right after I finished my motor I thought, f-it, i want it and I did it. If your worried about getting cought, don't worry, you can allways keep track of how many real miles are on the car and when you go in for emissions just reset it to the real amount. Thats what I do, and cops don't check of course when you get pulled over. Do it. pm me if you need directions.

From my understanding it's not ilegal to reset your odometer to 0, it's ilegal to not tell the new buyer what the real mileagle is and the DOT what the real mileage is.

You can make it say whatever you want so long as you don't mis-represent the mileage to the government or a potential buyer. This may vary from state to state (or Canada for that matter) but I think that's the law in my area...

screw it... just tell everyone right now how to do it... i have a feeling that you wont get in trouble by explaining it.

ok Im doing it ... I'm just going to write down the miles right now and IF I ever do sell it ( which I prolly won't ) I'll just say it was reset after the swap and rebuild ... thanks.

2 people have told me 2 different things about my engine rebuild and odometer, tell me which one is right. my friend says to set the odometer back to 0, my moms boyfriend says leave it where it is. what do you guys think? its a complete rebuild, altyhough i also never toughed the tranny

the odometer is not only for miles onthe engine, its miles on the whoel car, meaning, yeah your motor will have zero, but will your suspension? your drivetrain? exhuast? and other parts so dont be rollign back them miles :nono:

I'm with him, you can run into alot of problems with insurance or selling it when the miles don't add up.
Just take a note of the miles when you install the engine, and go from there.

These guys are right, you'll be in serious trouble for that. It's called fraud.

Ok, I'm a little worried that my odometer may have been rolled back, because I took out the gauge cluster to replace a light bulb, and the thing looks like it was taken apart... The car seemed to have pretty low miles when I got it, but I disregarded it. How can I tell if the miles were rolled back? How easy would it have been for this guy to have done?

Its easy to open it up and roll back or just replace the whole gauge cluster. I know in Cali they take down your odom reading every two years for smog. I think if you ran car fax and one reading was lower than the last it would come up as a hot item..

If anybody knows how hard it is to roll one back let me know because I'm going to do it on my car.

You probably just got this thread closed. Odometer rollback is illegal and posting about illegal activities is against the rules. Besides, you just shouldnt post a question like that on a public forum anyways. :notgood:

You just have to go back through the records of the DMV and see what the last reported milage is. You can also pull a carfax and see what it says other then that its hard to say.

Ill make sure never to buy ANYTHING from you. Not only is this VERY illegal, but it is just a dick move.

i was worried about that too on my car when i ran a carfax on it... the mileage was going up as i went down the list, then all of a sudden, it was way down to 27,000 miles... (went down from 40K or something)... good thing the guy i bought it from gave me every service record on the car, so i went through, and found that the carfax must have had a screw up on it.... i was a bit relieved after that... it is a dick move to set it back though... would kind of suck to be the guy getting caught too... o well i guess.. research before you buy.....
