wheel size and offset to be able to run 275s?

In the near future I want to set the Talon up with a 275 wheelset. I don't care much about the tires hanging out past the fenders. This will be my autocross setup. I was running 235/45/17s this year and next year I want to go way wider. I am looking for what size tire I would be running as far as 275/?/17 sidewall height is concerned, what width of rim I would have to run, and what offset of wheel to buy. In fact I would also be looking for some suggestion as to what wheels would be fairly lightweight and perform well to be able to fit a 275 width tire on a 17 wheel. Insane traction is the goal.

To go 275 you will need to have wheel widths of 9"-11". To get wheels that size and have 275 tires are not going to be light.

I had only been able to dig up stock fitment guides not extreme fitment guides. I think 275/40/17 is what I am going to be going for. Now can someone suggest a wheelset in that size that will be decent lightweight?

Decent weight all depends on the purpose of use. And those wheels aren't going to be cheap either.

I'm running over 600whp with 8.0" width wheels and ultra-high-performance tires like Falken Azenis or BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW and they work fine for me.

But my guess is you don't autox/road race, especially with those hp numbers. When autox/road racing, you obviously want as much rubber to the ground as possible.

With all the aero work I did to the Talon this summer, the plan is really to have this car at both the Blackhawk and Road America high speed autocross events next year. I saw in your one post snowborder that the one guy was wearing 255s on his 8 inch width rims. I thought the widest rim you could get on a 8 inch width rim was 235!? I am already running Falken Azenis tires in the 235 width on my 8 inch wide Superleggeras. If I can get 255s to fit on my Superleggeras I might go that route. Pretty sure I would have to go with a spacer setup as there isn't a ton of inner clearance in the rear now with my 235s. I looked at Mavisky's setup and really like that. It looks perfect! Just what I was aiming for!

I went from the stocks to some 16x8 with 245's...You wouldn't belive the difference in the way the car handles..just amazing

bmoha, whoever you saw with 255's on an 8" wheel might have stretched the tires. I'm not sure of the pros/cons of this though.

there is a huge difference between:
tires that fit on a wheel
and
tires that fit PROPERLY on a wheel

a 255/40 should NOT be on a 8" wheel. The minimum width recommendation is 8.5" but optimal would be 9". Having a tire that is too wide for a certain wheel width will cause the center section of the tire to wear down faster. In addition, depending on the tire will cause sloppy unresponsive handling. Tirerack.com list acceptable rim width and even optimal rim width for all their tires.

Lastly, Chad go slap whoever told you that putting 265 on a 8" width is ok. I have personally seen 275/40/17 BF Goodrich Drag Radials on a 8" but it was STRICTLY for drag racing.

Im using a 5zigen FNORC-1 (I think thats what they are...) in a 17x10 with something like a 12mm offset to run my 275 V710s. I know of at least one other thats running the same wheel as I am and we'll both be running a 3rd season on the tires cause they just dont seem to wear out. Im sure theyre heat cycled out a bit by now, but maybe itll give the competition a chance to catch up.

The 12mm offset gives me about 5-8mm clearance on the inside. I also have to run a 3-finger gap with my 700lb/in front and 450lb/in rear spring rates to prevent the tires hitting the fender.

Before trying to go crazy with a wheel setup, you might want to work on the rest of your setup.

1) EBC Green's are for the street. At least go to EBC Red's or a R4S or something like a Hawk HP+. This will help your stopping power. In doing this first, you will actually have a slight upper hand if you do go to the 275 setup because having that big of a rim and tire will put more stress on the brakes because it is more weight rotating that the pads and rotors need to stop. That, add more unsprung weight to the car. Since these pads are considered more of a "track car" pad, you just need to put some heat into them to attain their maximum stopping power.

2) What kind of tires were you running for your current Auto X setup? Even getting something with a softer compound and a more aggressive tread design with better technology behind it will yield better results. And the good thing is, in your rim size, tires are cheap. Go try and look up a 275/40/16 (or 17) and see how much a nice set of tires are for those.

Other then that, I really see no good reason for you to want to run that large of a tire. Your power mods are modest and with better brakes and tires you would be spending far less money and I guarantee you better times at any event you attend. If you are going to be doing a dedicated track tire, why not go R compound? There will always be a limitation to a street tire that R compounds can surpass.

I upgraded to Hawk brake pads in the front. Still running the EBC Kevlar greens in the rear. I have SS brake lines on all four corners. I have strut tower braces front and rear. I have the top of strut poly mounts. I recently replaced all my control arms in the front so even though they are poly bushings they are brand new rubber. I was running Falken Azenis 512s w rated 235/45/17s.
Seems like at all the autocross events I go to, there is a batch of EVO8s and WRX STis running monster meats with little to no power modification. Seems the most common size I see on those cars are 275/45/17s.

You might want to reconsider the 275's. 275/35/17 sounds about right but I don't know that that size exists. Last I knew 285/30/18's ruled at autocross. You'll want no more than +20mm offset for them, +15mm would be safer.

Yeah. The only size I could find was a 275/40/17. And that's in a Toyo R888 and BFG G-Force T/A KD tire. You know, something aggressive for Auto X . The only thing about those, is that they have a high tread ware rating. If you want something soft in that size, it boils down to competition tires like the BFG R1's, Hoosier A6's and R6's, and Kumho V700's or V710's and the like.

My 16X7 Enkei J10s and 17X8 OZ Superleggera wheelsets both have a reputation for lightweight and rigidity. I am intending this new wide wheelset to be only for trackdays but still be street tire spec and still be able to be driven in the rain. That might just not be possible.

Although it would be killer to run big meats, I think it isn't going to be practical. I really appreciate all the info you guys posted. There were some great articles in there. I hadn't taken into consideration that 275 would force me into coilovers. The offerings for tires seem pretty slim at this size as well. I think I am going to wuss out and go for a 255 setup. Looks like I am going to have to sell my 17X8 OZ Superleggeras and get a new set of 17X9 wheels. So it looks like I am going to have a wheelset for sale.

Keep in mind though for those browsing this thread that some of these wheels don't even have the correct bolt pattern, and a large number of them probably won't have the right offset as well.

When it comes to finding cheap and effective 17x9" wheels look into offerings for the 96+ Ford Mustang. With a set of coilovers and some fender cutting (or stiff springs on a tall ride height) they will work great.

After a lot of thought I still decided to go with a fairly wide tire/wheel combo. I'm going to stick to my guns. I want to at the least go with a 265 but would prefer to go with 275.
I have been doing a lot of reading and research on the EVO websites and it does seem that it is a lot easier to find a 9 or a 9.5 inch wide wide wheel in a 18 wheel size. Although I did find a set of wheels that is absolutely amazing that is 17X9. If I can fit a 265 on a 9 inch wide rim I might go with those. I can deal with a 265. Otherwise I will be looking for a 18X9 or 9.5 sized wheel. Wheels get really expensive at those sizes but there do seem quite a few different wheels sets in those sizes for sale on the different EVO forums. I have kinda set my mindset that I will have do lay down a serious chunk of change for this new wheelset. I have been looking at Advan wheels and Volks Racing etc. Really, I am looking to buy my ultimate wheelset primarily with roadracing in mind.
I am going to sell my current 17X8 OZ Superleggeras wheelset. I got a great and I do mean a great deal on that wheelset and should be able to sell them at a really good price for a perspective buyer and still make a profit. Even though it is a really nice higher performance wheelset at a very light weight it falls short of the mark as far as my expectations.
I think this next year I am going to be upgrading to a Gt25 ball bearing turbo. I think it'll be perfect for lo and high speed autocross with crazy fast spool time and response.
I guess my questions at this point are; 1.Will a 265 width tire fit on a 9 inch wide rim? (If so I might buy that 17X9 wheelset) and 2. What offset would I need with a 9 inch wide rim? What offset would I need for a 9.5 inch wide rim (if a 265 doesn't fit on a 9 inch rim)?

I run a 275/40-17 on a 17x9. The problem is that the outer rolling diameter is almost an inch larger than stock meaning that my already tall gearing is even taller. (I cross the traps in 3rd gear at 95mph at less than 7000rpm)

If I were to do it all over again I would follow the advice of others and go to a 285/30-18 on a 18x10" wide wheel. to keep on topic though the 275's fit very well on a 9" wide wheel with hardly any bulging at the sidewalls.
