If that's you're car(looks great), then you DON'T have GSX rims... those are 3G wheels (don't bend so easy).

But yes, 225/45/17 should fit no problem. I have that size on my GSX rims.

Yes they will fit but your speedometer and odometer will move faster than stock, at least on a GSX. You may be able to get away with it on a GS.
205/55R16=24.93 inches in diameter
225/45R17=25.02 inches in diameter
215/50R17=25.51 inches in diameter
I think you should be fine being your speedo is calibrated for 24.93

Nice license plate.

Something looks off...either those aren't 215's or your "GSX" wheels aren't actually 17x6.5, maybe the 3g version is 17x6?..or it could just be a wide tread design. I had 225/45 on the GSX wheel (17x6.5) and they bulged about like that, maybe a little less. I wouldn't go any wider than you have now. Tires like a flush or slightly curved in shape, not bulged out. It'll work, but you'll lose steering response and the car may feel a little "squishy". Works great for straight line though like DSMspyder said.

hey guys thanks for all your help ...i think i'm gonna stick to the stock 215-50-17

hey question my rims are'nt 97-99 gsx rims ..thats what i was told ..so there 3g rims how can u tell?

and one other thing my friend works at a tire shop he can get me kumho's for 79 each.. here's the link tell me what u guys think..i diff need all season tires cause i live in new york

thanks

Like I said, the 225/45R17 will work better on your car due to the fact it is not a GSX for several reasons:
1:The diameter is closer to what came stock on your car so your speedo and odometer will be better calibrated.
2: 215/50R17 do not come Z rated in most manufacturers. Most will be H rated or V rated. This will help cornering stability due to less flex in the sidewall.
3: The ten millimeters you will gain in width will help your traction.

Those are factory 97 GSX rims I have the same exact ones sitting in my garage.

NO, they're not.

GSX wheels are 2-piece.
The spokes on these go straight to the lip, where you can see they are 2-piece.

3G wheels are 1 piece (although a few ealy 3G's came with GSX wheels)
The spokes on these curve inward dramatically before they touch the lip.

Yes, you can run 225/45/17s. Question answered. Move on.

Sorry to bring this thread back from its 5 1/2 yr slumber but Ive been searching the forums to see if a
235 50 17 would fit on my stock 2g GSX rim with no issues with my car at its stock height? The car is Auto and I was told I would need a 26" tire to finish the 1/4 in 3rd... the tire measures 26.25" tall.

Ive ran across a few older threads with people running that size but it doesn't say if they were using the stock rim or not.

I was running the 215/40r17s on my rs with the factory 98 gsx wheels and its overall height was about .75" smaller than factory but when I changed I went up to a 215/45r17 and they ended up being the closest you could get to factory tire height which is what you should be looking at when concerned with speedo and odometer calibration. its crazy cause my rs came factory with 14s and I bought it with the 17s on there and the tire size was smaller than factory. not only did my speedo suck but my gas mileage did and my car road like crap and looked funny with the abnormal fender well to tire ratio. another thing I did when buying new tires was had them filled with nitrogen. it made the ride so much smoother and I don't have to worry about osmosis leakdown anymore

Im not worried about what the speedo says I just want to finish the 1/2 in 3rd gear. I have 26" DR's on my gst so the speedo is quite a bit off.

Anyone know if the 235 50 17 will fit?

I ran 235/45/17 on an old set I had years ago. It looked really stupid. Way too much sidewall.

Im not to overly concerned with it looking stupid...more concerned with running a 10.99 at the track on street tires.

They worked fine, but I recommend you get a tire with a semi-stiff sidewall. They had mucho sidewall flex w/ Michelins anyways.
