I noticed the 97+ gsx has a different factory part number.
  • 97-99 gsx rack & pinion: MR244347
  • 95-99 rs gs gst, 95-96 gsx: MB910690

beck/arney remanufactured units doesnt even list any for the gsx but a1-cardone's remanufactured units list one part number for all 2g's. I need to buy a reman unit but no one could really give me an answer as to the fitment or what is different for the 97+ units. Anyone ?

Starting in 97, the AWDs had a different rack, while the FWDs continued to use the "old" 95-96 rack. What the difference is ... I do not know. But if you have a 97+ AWD, I'd try to get an MR244347 and not risk getting an MB910690. I say this because the steering angles for 97 AWDs and 97 FWDs are different.

Except for the lwr comp arm, rack&pinion the '96 '97 seem to share every part of the front suspension(tie rods, cross member, lat arm, hub, steering linkage/joint...). So would it be safe to think that the 96 rack will physically fit the 97?

Would there be any reasonable explanation for the change in lwr comp arms. WTF

The change in the compression arms has been discussed before. They flipped the inboard bushing on the driver's side so that the car wouldn't drift off roads with high centers.

My guess is that either rack would fit. My guess is based on the idea that the change in the rack is merely one of limiting travel, because of the switch to 215s. The FWD rack probably has a bit more travel and would cause some rubbing at full lock. As long as you didn't go all the way to lock, you'd be fine.

But these are guesses. They are based on some experience and a lack of any other ideas, but that's all. If we're talking less than $200 difference or a few more days of searching, I would not (yet) opt for the FWD rack.

I need to replace my steering rack in my 95 GSX, So can I buy a 97-99 awd rack or not? steeringrack.com say that the 95 rack is very different and I must find a 95 GSX rack to make it work. Thing is that that seems very hard to find. What do I do?
