Ok, I have a 97 GS with all new 98 GS Front suspension and drivetrain, engine, tranny, everything except for the body! On my last setup, I had a set of 17" wheels and I kept breaking studs one way or another. Either I was stripping the teeth and it would just spin and have to be cut off or broke off... or I would be snaping studs in half. Well I thought I fixed that with the new hub, but this time I also have OEM Spec Wheels. 17" Chrysler Sebring Wheels. Now all you know that these are pretty much the same size as the GSX wheels, same bolt patern and all of that... Only difference is that they have 50 series tires. The wheel mounts up to the hub perfectly, so perfect that they are a little difficult to get the studs centered because of how tight a fit it is. Thats supposed to be good, just so that there is no pressure on the studs. Well I just snapped ALL 5 on my passenger side! At first it was 3, so I turned around and went home. Its weird, it snapped all 3 in a matter of a second. Then when I got home and pulled into my driveway, the last 2 snapped and the car fell. What the hell is going on? PLEASE HELP! Is there an aftermarket alternative to these OEM POS Studs?

LOL, your guess is as good as mine. I dont know. Neither does mitsubishi. Garcia Mitsubishi's parts thinks its because of the wheels. But they are OEM Spec... Service thinks that they were overtorqued, but I've been driving around for a while now, they would have broken almost instantly if they were overtorqued.

Even if my wheels weren't ballanced right, which I dont ever feel any mad vibrations from ballancing, I can fly to 140 easily, these are oem wheels and would put the pressure on the calipers... You know the ring in the center, thats there to slide the wheel onto... so that way there is no stress on the wheel studs, all the studs are supposed to do is just bolt the wheel down. Only other way to put stress on them is extreame cornering... but common... you have a TSI AWD, so I know you have beat on your car around corners, I used to have a 95 and 90 GSX and I used to beat on those around corners and no such luck as to breaking any. On my Accord LXI Turbo I never broke studs. Hell even on my rear passenger side wheel, I'm only bolted up to 3 studs, one of the others is broke and the one next to it is stripped... and those aren't breaking.

I'm thinking that maybe they got loose enough and it started puting more pressure on the studs that way. On my last setup I was soo paranoid that everytime I could, I checked the tightness of the bolts. This time I thought I could feel safe.

You are using the wrong lugnuts. You need ones witha shank and washer.

Dorman #611-117

Agreed. You cant use a tapered seat lugnut on a flat seat wheel. As stated, you need either Dorman part listed above or a set of factory lugnuts from mitsu.

I hope you guys are right! Thanks alot! I'm going to mitsubishi to buy out thier inventory of OEM Studs, so maybe I can get 20 OEM lug nuts. Also.

another question... even tho my other studs haven't broke, is it possible they are allready damaged? Meaning should I replace ALL my studs with the Dorman 611-117 lugs? Because there are only 7 broke, 2 on the back that have been broken before I got the car, and all 5 up front.

Yeah, I agree. Scary! I have all new Eclipse GSX Studs... but turns out they are the same. I was hopeing they were a little different since its comming from a Turbo AWD car... But no, same part number. So I have all new studs now and they are going on, but I'm going to put the car on blocks, and while I'm at it, install my Tokico Lowering Springs but I'm going to keep the car on blocks until I can get those lugs.. I like those. I dont want oem... even tho they wont be seen, except by me... I want those specific lugs. Will be posting pics of everything soon.
