2g and 1g shocks, whats the difference?

I have a 92 TSI AWD and a 97 TSI AWD, but my 92 needs new shocks. Can I take the shocks off the 97 and put them on the 92? i might sound like a newb by askin but Ived never tried to find out the difference afterowning both cars for over 8 years.

the suspension designs of the 1G and 2G are different, the shocks are not interchangeable
