Quick Wheel and Tire Question

I found a nice set of rims I want. They are 17X8" and since I have FWD I want the widest tire I can fit on the wheel without rubbing. I was planning on going with, at the most, a 1.5" drop. Question: If I got a +31mm offset for those wheels, could I fit a 255/40/70 tire without rubbing? I've done major resreach on wheels and tires lately but didn't really find the answer to this one. My guess is that it would fit but I don't know about the rubbing.

No. You will need a wheel with +25mm offset to fit a 255/40. You will also need to roll your rear fenders with the ride height you plan on using.

I've checked out the link before and that's where I got the idea because in that link it has a person who used 255/40/17 17x8 +32 (the first pic top left in the link).

Yes, they will fit but this combination does not make sense. Tires that large would be impractical unless they are dedicated to racing. Someone serious about racing would not put 255 width tires on 8 inch wheels; 9 or 10 would be more appropriate.

And these would protrude far enough to make fender flange rolling irrelevant.
