anybody know why rotors are installed at the wheel on independent suspension? why not at the differential or transmission? seems like that would reduce unsprung weight and eliminate flexing brake lines.

military humm-vees have rotors at the diffs, but they aren't exactly high performance vehicles. is it a matter of space, air-flow, or more stress on the cv joints?

From the information my buddies just gave me, inboard brakes cost more to install and service, the cv joint is constantly recieving drag, whether from acceleration or deceleration, so the brake placement would not affect longevity of the running gear. So, if you decide to install inboard brakes, let me know, I personally think they make sense on high-performance applications.:dsm:

It's not exactly easy to fit brakes *under* a car either. The reduction in weight and performance gain would not outweigh the cost, or the lose of clearance.

if i recall correctly, humm-vee rotors are flat, and are held in place by 6 bolts which thread through a flange from the end of the cv joint. i think flange is the right word.

i might look into what it would take to move the rear rotors to the inside. probably out of range of my meager fabrication skills however.

i did some looking around, and it seems like lots of 4wd indy cars used inboard rotors. any indy fan knows that 4wds really sucked it up, but it has been done in serious competition.
