Someone told me that over time, if you ride with less air in your tires, then it will save you from wearing alot of tread. Is this true?

No, if you don't have enough pressure in your tires over time you end up wearing out the outer tread on your tires and if you have too much pressure you end up wearing out the inner tread on the tires.
