hey every body this is my 96 eagle talon TSI AWD street build. im looking for slick, clean and a sleeper for the most part. so heres alittle history on the Talon. ive had the talon for about 2 years now and have wanted to build it up since the day that i got it. i picked it up from a older man that had gotten it for his 16 or 17 year old high school son. when they got the car it had a fresh rebuild and not even 500 miles on the engine, tranny, transfer case, and rear differential. needless to say his son did not take very good care of the car. hit a few curbs so the front bumper starting to fall off so he put the LeBra on it which i asolutly hate but its keeping the bumper held up for now. the original owners told me the rings were shot and pretty much seized up and wouldnt turn over, he gave me the keys, i turned my truck around becuase i was sure the battary was dead. hooked up the jumper cables, checked the oil, coolant, etc. tried to start it and it turned over with no problem. just seemed like the battary needed alittle more charge. other than that sounded pretty good for the information i had at the time. i waited for a couple more mins, tried to start it again it fired up but had alot of white smoke. so only let it run for about 15 or 20 seconds. i told him that im not to sure what it actually needs to get it going until i get into it. it could be easy and could be a PITA. he was asking 1300 for the Talon. i told him "well if you want an offer for the car, i can make an offer but it wont be your askin". i waited i few seconds, he said "ok go ahead". i told him ill give you 500 cash now and ill put in on my trailer. he began to tell me that somebody offered him 700 so hell "think" about it and get back to me later that day. i told him that was just fine. so i left. i got a call from the guys son, and he told me that the other guy didnt have the money and couldnt for a few weeks, he then told me that if i could give him 550 then the Talon was mine. ofcourse i took it.
until just a few weeks ago ive just been doing little things to it. had the engine pulled and partially taken apart. things just kept coming up to where i had to put it on the back burner again and again. and thuaght that its getting old. i need that car up and going, i want that car up and going. its my 1st AWD for christ sakes.
so my 1st chapter as you would say will be the engine. last week i torn the head down, pulled the crank, pistons came out as well, pulled the balance shafts and all the front casing apart to do a much needed balance shaft delete. and do you remember when i told you that the original owner told me that the pistons were fried? well i got pretty lucky and the just had some carbon build up. turbo has ALOT of shaft play as i found out. rings didnt look great, but that could have been cuased by the 16 year old kid not breaking the engine in what so ever. so i preceeded to order,
-EVE brand rings
-BSE kit
-ACL race main and rod bearings
-complete Green Performance engine gaskets with stock style head bolts (which will be left on the shelf for this build)
as i was saying before, when i got everything apart i noticed that everything was in pretty good shape besides the obvious.
i installed the balance shaft delete kit over the weekend except for the stuf shaft that comes in the kit. (no oil galleys) i ordered the 1.6l mirage stub shaft so it should be in thursday or friday and that will get finished up. should have the piston rings, rod and main bearings in soon hopefully. well honestly i allready got both of them last saturday but they were both std size and i needed .020" rings and .5 over bearings.
so im planing on going further then just throwing in the rest of the stock parts. heres a small list from my list of things to do:)
-ARP head studs
-ARP main studs
-stainless intake and exhuast valves
-BC or HKS 272 cams
-BC TI valve springs and retainers
-ARP exhuast mani and intake mani studs
-aftermarket exhuast manifold (havent looked into brands just yet)
-Big 16g turbo, maybe a 20g
-full 2.5" or 3" header back exhuast
-speed density or 3" inline GM maf/translator
-FMIC and 2.5" UICP and LICP
-Eprom ECU with DSM link just becuase its more user friendly
-walboro 255 fuel pump
-AFPR (probably fuel lab)
-1000cc injectors
this so far is what i kind of have in mind of the top on my head. theres plenty more i know but im sure your getting tired of reading this. so yeah. i try to get a few updated pics up soon. thanks for reading my book.
:hellyeah:

heres a couple of pictures from the day I got the TSI home

this is the TSI as it is now. I liked the white rimed but they wont go with my white on black look:banghead:

really nice build and good luck!! i have the exact same car and hope to share some tips during our builds!!

thanks alot, kevin

Sweet. im excited. I cant wait to get her up and tearing up the slow couple of Hondas in my small town. theres a dude down the street that absolutely hates DSM and I absolutely hate Hondas. so I thinkitll it be a lot of fun to put him in his place. :hellyeah: and before I got into this town he "had" the fasted import in town. theres a new sheriff in town LOL

Ill have photos of the engine later today. Thanks for the imput guys.

here are my lastest block pictures after cleaning the head surface and honing.

before honing is on the right. after honing is on the left

looks pretty nice so are you ready to start putting it back together or have parts not came in yet?

Ill be picking up a stub shaft today and rings and bearings should be here soon. Itll start to go back together. Today the front case should be together and once i get my ACL bearings and ring it. Itll look closer to a start.

I would like a 20g. I have the stock 14b and it has alot of shaft play both ways. It would be a beast with a 20g. Tons of room.to play. I wont be wanting to buy a turbo for a little while tho. Theres still more to go before then.

So heres the lastest uodate for the build- the ACL bearings i ordered like i said before came. And i had to ship them back do to being the wrong size. They came as std and i need .5 over main and rod. And i figured out that ACL doesnt make .5 over in race bearing. So im not searching around for different ones. Im looking into the street ACL bearings. My engin had king bearings in it before and ive heard there very good as well so my minds not totally set on the ACL's.
I got the stub shaft today from the dealership for the BSE and got everything ready, sealed up, and good to go. Now i really need the bearings to start putting every together.

Leons about 45 mins east of wichita

so today I got the head cleaned up and just more prep work and got my piston rings on and set. now just need to find out how to clock them. the manufacture didn't have to much information for it on the install instructions. have to find another crank since mine is to far cut to reuse. And to much of a risk. believe im just going to go with an OE crank. proven members have pushed them to limits I don't believe I will have this engine atleast at.

had to delete the other pictures to do not enough memory, but these are the updates.

got the head 95% cleaned up and need to find out how to take out the valve seals to replace them. still stuck on what to do about a crank. im interested in getting an eagle crank. just need to weight the options of keep searching for an OEM crank or go after market. got a new set of stainless valves orders, so ill have those sitting until I get the TI valves and retainers.

haven't updated for a couple days now. But got my stainless intake and exhaust valves ordered Saturday so they should be here either tomorrow or Thursday. still :banghead: on a crank and cant really make up my mind. a local DSMr has a couple OEM cranks for sale at a good price so im able to grab them or just 1 of them and have it checkin out by a local machine shop and hopefully just needs polished like he says. or else it back to the drawling board.

The guys at Force Performance have taken the stock crank to the very extreme(600+hp) with great results! I would keep the stocker get it polished and balanced if need be, and call it a day.

just got these in yesterday. now waiting to beable to still get a crank, cams, springs, keepers, and 3g lifters.

trying to get my pics back onto my build thread and any body just lookin can check if out. ill be setting up a photobucket shortly.

Lookin good! Don't forget to put silicon around the rubber OEM plug that you use to block off the balance shaft to prevent it from leaking, if you got the soft one not hard one. I also put a light amount around the outer part of the large crank seal in the center of the oil pump case to prevent leaking there as well :thumb:

just picked up a "newly rebuilt" 7 bolt engine. haven't broke into it yet but planning on using it for parts. the crank is brand new in it. has a few other things that I have to check into. it has the BSE kit but im not sure if the stub shaft has the oil galley or not, brand new water pump which I know I need for a need rebuild so that will get put to use. guy said the head was rebuilt about 10k miles ago but im not sure if there stock replacement components or not until I break it open. not sure if the head studs or anything internals are stock replacements or aftermarket at all. im sure there not but lets hopes. so heres a few links to my photobucket. ill have more later on when I get further.

:hellyeah:today im going to try and work on getting another engine stand to start pulling my spare engine apart, and also picked up a 11/16th drill bit to work on porting my OFH. doesn't seem like it will be to bad. but seeing the size of the hole I have to port now and the size of the drill bit I got, looks like it will take some time.:sneaky::sneaky:
