NOOB needs [AUTOMATIC] Tranny help?

well my car... when i push the gas, RPM goes up to 4k and my speed goes up to 20mph, then it goes up with high RPM. Is this a tranny prob?? I havent got my car checked out with mitsu dealer or anything... any help would be appreciated..(its eating up gasss)

Sorry for not being so clear. Here is the descriptive info.
When i press the gas, it does not have power. In order to speed up, i have to press the gas hard. When I do that, the RPM goes up to 4K and the speed of the car goes up to 20mph from 0. The speed goes up gradually very slowly, unless i push the gas a little bit more. All it does is high RPM and slow speed. I asked someon about this problem and that person said it could be the tranny problem. I just would like to know what the problem can be.

So when your car says 20mph, are you DOING 20mph? If not, it isn't nessesarily a tranny problem - the spedometer gets it's information from the axles, not the tranny.

If you are talking about your clutch slipping, then it isn't your tranny: it's your clutch. If you are cruising down the road, put it in 5th and hit the gas, do your RPM's shoot up, but don't feel any or little acceleration?

Just something to help narrow down the problem - or at least decode the description given......

actually sound slike he is talking about an automatic Trans. If that is the case then yes your trans is going.

well that would have been nice to know though i thought the spedo was connected to the axles in an auto also .. so why would the spedometer shoot up with no movement?

oh yes, i forgot to mention my car is auto. Can it be the timeing belt maybe? Someone suggested i should check that out. If my tranny IS the problem, how much do you think itll cost to repair it?

Yes iam giong 20mph when the spedo says 20, its just very slow in accelerating.

Do you..... have any fluid in that transmission?

If yes, rebuild time.

Oh, and rebuild time if no, too.

Up to $2500, maybe half that.

actually, my auto trans is pretty much the same thing....it does have trans fluid, however it looks all burnt, like it hasnt been changed....think if i change it....that will solve it?
