For you GVR4/GGSX owners. A fellow DSMer has helped me locate a 90 GGSX with a much sought(by me) magical rear end. Supposedly, the GGSX has a 2.846 rear gear. This in turn would help lower the RPM's at cruising speed. :thumb:

Knowing that, I've got some Q's pertaining to the Galant AWD cars.

1. Is there a good site with rear drive axle information? Other than here...

2. ^^^ reason...... I know the early models had 3 bolts axles/4bolt hubs. Has anyone done a 4 bolt axle/5 bolt hub conversion?

3. It would only make sense that the center pumpkin... diff (or whatever YOU make call it) would be identical to the T/E/L cars. But not having owned one, I can't say for positive. Are the axles totally interchangeable between the T/E/L and Galants? 3bolt or 4 bolt? How about spline count into the rear diff? Same? (I'm after simply changing out the center pumpkin into my car....... thus the interchangability question)

4. Are the axle lengths the same?

5. ^^^ If that is all true and can be done, then one can assume that the entire rear suspension module is common, right?

There is one MAJOR problem. You need to swap the front diff ratios as well. No biggie you say? Yes it is, the GGSX uses a W5M31 series tranny while the T/E/L/GVR4's use a W5M33 series tranny and the parts can not be interchanged due to a fundamental design difference. If you do not change the front diff ratio you will burn up the VC and center diff. Not only that but you won't get the reduction in RPM because the front wheels are still being driven by the old ratio.

I greatly appreciate the input but I already knew that information. :thumb:

In the end that won't concern me, as the rear diff is going in my RWD car.

Galantvr4.org if it's not already on there....someone can sure tell you the answer you seek.

Besides, if you are after lowering the RPM's at cruising speed, you can always get a different ratio 5th gear, for a MUCH easier solution!.

Not quite gonna work. No 5th gear in my Turbo400, which has final ratio of 1:1 (that's 3rd). :)

But yea, IF I was running the stock tranny... that'd work.

Still working on it. The chic is hard to get ahold of. Probably pick it up next weekend.

I also found another one back home I'll be picking up that is Silver.

I forgot that you were working on this project. Sorry, I should have read your post with more attention...

But if you are going to look for a different ratio rear end, why not look into something that would actually hold the torque? Like a transplant from a Starion, or Supra, or 300ZX?

Or even a domestic solid rear end?

According to J. Shepard, I'll be right at the limits of the diff/axles. For right now, I'm trying to keep it simple. The GGSX diff will give me the ratio I'm looking for and yet will be a simple bolt in.

Starion rear would be a good option, but the ratios aren't there.
3.545 was stock
Optional 3.90 and 4.10.

They do have significantly larger axles though:
non intercooled axles : 30 mm
intercooled 86-87 axles : 32 mm
intercooled 88-89 axles : 36 mm

I'm also looking at 89 vette rear that has a 2.59 ratio.

That too would be good , but would be better adapted on a FWD car, using the rear trailing arm mounts. Not that it can't be done. The AWD mounts would entail more modification. Just looking to keep it as simple as possible.

Thanks!!

First I know this is an old thread but I think I may have a problem....

IF just say a 95 GSX with the Viscous rear LSD had a rebuilt trans from the wrong car
installed would that explain high RPMs and now a busted Read Diff?

Just wondering ... My car is acting really odd now... I have what I think is higher then normal RPM for 5th gear and now my Rear Diff where the V-LSD is is making an odd sound like loose change and the car seems to want to pull to one side sometimes...
it became to spooky to drive so its parked...

Any insight would be helpful many thanks :dsm:

My detailed post about my issue.
