Car: 1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD Manual.

Problem: Timing belt stripped some teeth and slipped, murdering my stock motor. Right now I've a crate replacement sitting outside, imported from Japan. It's got under 30-40k miles on it. The thing is, I don't know exactly what year (aside that it's 1g) it is, or if it's off an AWD or FWD. My compression numbers and warante (which the company I ordered the motor through is sending me) havn't arrived yet (which will give me some impression to what the motor's condition is).

So, I need to know that if the replacement motor I've got turns out to have been FWD, what all will I have to do in order to fit it into my AWD?

I'm keeping my current tranny, so will I need to replace my Fly Wheel, or...?

Thanks in advance. I can get pictures if necessary by tomarrow.

i dont think it matters. The motor should be the same. The only difference would be the tranny and transfer case. The oil pan may be different though to accomodate for the t-case. Not positive on that one. If you need the screwed motor out of your way i will take it off your hands for you:thumb:

motors are exactly same..

all 1g motors are same all 2g motors are same (interchangeable)

To drop a FWD 90 motor into an AWD 90 car, your gonna need to change a couple of things.

You need the awd rear mount bracket(bolted onto the block). MAYBE the front mount.

AWD flywheel

AWD starter spacer plate (behind flywheel bolted on with 4? 10mm bolts)this aligns the starter with the tranny, make sure you do it! otherwise, your gonna have to drop the tranny or pull the motor again.

AWD starter

Lower tranny plate- angled piece that bolts onto the block, right next to the oil pan with 2 10mm bolts. and one 12mm bolts to the tranny I believe. It covers the bottom of the flywheel.

Get ready to tap the back of the block for the drivers side half shaft mount. Those holes weren't tapped on my fwd block and I had to tap them the old fashioned way....drive the damn bolts in by force- I found out when the motor was already in the car. So I said screw it :D If you take off the A/C keep the bracket. Cut off the corner of the bracket that spaces the half shaft mount. it goes between the block and the shaft mount and is held on by one of the 2 bolts.

If this is a 91-94 motor you will need to change the oil filter housing to accept the engine oil cooler.

You will also need to do some rewiring on the harness for the throttle body sensors, cam angle sensor, and coil packs. OR you can just swap these from the blown motor onto the jdm one and make it easier :)

If it has the cyclone intake manifold---You got me on that one. I am not sure what has to be wired where for the butterflys to work.

FWD and AWD ecus are the same as long as they are 90 M/Ts.

Not sure about the 2G motors. I know about the 90s because I went through somewhat of the same situation.

Wrecked my FWD Laser(90) and got a Talon TSi AWD(90) rolling chassis. Dropped my 6 bolt in and BAM instant traction!

There might be a couple other things, but these are the main ones that come to mind at 4 AM

Guys, if you dont know, dont answer please. It would be a much better place.

Good luck

Turbodsm90,

I know this thread is old but I have to dig it up because I need your help.
A friend did a motor swap from a 90 Eclipse 6 bolt FWD to 93 Eclipse AWD 7 bolt and having starter grinding issue. He made the FWD starter plate fit somehow "grinding" I don't really know but now we have this grinding problem when trying to start the car. Eventually, it will start but with this horrible noise. My question is beside the alignment different for using the FWD starter plate, is the thickness different also? Can it be that since he use the grinding method, the starter is not align correctly? We use the starter from an AWD and flywheel of an AWD. The starter teeth and the flywheel teeth is a little chewed up though. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, I appreciate the depth of your description.

1) check to make sure your starter and tranny are bolted up tightly(please tell me you have the 2 dowel pins on the block/tranny. Those often overlooked parts play a huge role on whether or not your tranny is gonna live, as well as clutch, flywheel, ring gear on the flywheel, etc.,...

2)if this helps yet you still have grinding, your starter and/or flywheel ring gear may be F.U.B.A.R.'d(F'd Up Beyond All Recognition). You can buy a new ring gear, have a machine shop press the ring gear off/on the flywheel, and have a price tag half way to an aftermarket lightweight flywheel. Or you can buy a used flywheel from a reputable Junk Yard(<-laugh here).

3)Inspect the pinion gear on the starter to make sure all the teeth are still on there, and none of them are cracked, missing, chipped, melted, kidnapped, abducted, you get the point....

If you dont like theory's dont read on----

The spacer/alignment plate between the block and tranny serve its purpose, keeping the starter pinion a predetermined space away from the ring gear. I dont know how bad your friend hacked up the spacer plate, and I dont know where it was shaved, cut, mangled, stripped at.

Theory over-----

But I do know that if the starter is loose or if your flywheel is loose, something bad will happed.

If you have a weekend free, and feel like wrenching on the DSMmobile, wrench away, organize every nut and bolt in ziplock bags. Make sure you mark them on where they "most likely" go.

Good luck, and have fun. Take your time on it too. :thumb:

i just got done putting my fwd engine n my gsx, the front and rear mounts need to be changed , and i had to find that out the hard way. as long as everythinng else that was stated here, just adding the front motor mount needs to be the one off of the awd, they bring the engine a little close to the firewall.
