today when i was going to work, i downshifted to pass someone. as i did this, the shifter seemed "loose"(dont know how to explain this). if i shift into 2nd, 4th or Rev, i seems loose where i can move it around a lot. it also feels like a rubberband is pulling at the shifter when shifting into those gears too. if i am real gentle it will stay in gear. do i need a new tranny? or does anyone else know what may be wrong? any help is always appreciated.

Sounds like the 32mm ( i think they are 32) nuts on your transmission shafts are loose. Take the end cover off the trans and check them.

I would check the shifter mech on top to the tranny first. It sounds like a cotter pin may be hanging up.

If you feel and shift from that area and still feel it then pull off the end case of the trans. Watch out for that syncro that will fall out. OMG It will suprise you.

i havent been able to check my car out yet because its at my sisters and i have no way of getting there. But some people told me its my synchros. i may be wrong, but if it was, i wouldnt be able to use those gears at all right? i still can use 2, 4, and reverse, i just have to play with it a little. also if it helps any, my reverse lights dont come on unless i get it into reverse. sorry if i sound like a total newb, but to trannys, i am. i wont even go near these things.

Check your shift cables. On the top of the tranny, both shift cables run through a bracket and are held down by "u" clips similar to the clips holding down the other side of the cable on the interior of the car. If one of the clips loosened and popped out, then the cable will go "slack", and will bend when you are trying to shift instead of remaining rigid. That makes it feel "loose" as if it won't go into gear (it will feel wobbely). If those U clips are missing, you need to get another pair, pull the cable forward, and replace the clip over the cable. If you have a service manual, just lookup the picture, you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

Yea, i had the exact same problem. You just have to fix the clip, it took me about 2 min to fix the problem once I had found it.

thanks for all the info guys. ill be sure to check all those things out over the weekend
