Think I got ripped off on a 2g AWD tranny/xcase.

So this guy sells me a 97 awd tranny and xcase, along with the motor and tranny mounts. I finally get all the stuff but only get about half the mounts. I got some of the other mounts from another guy. I take the driver side motor mount (silver part) and guess what, the part he gave me that bolts to the block doesnt fit it. So Im thinking this is a 1g driver side mount, it just has 2 bolts coming up out of it. Where as a 2g has the 2 bolts coming up out of it, and then a hole for another bolt to go through the silver part of the mount and into the engine mount.

So this makes me start wondering, I run outside and count the splines on the xcase he sent me, 22 splines. Arent all 2g's 23 spline?

:talon: i beg to differ. i have a 95 talon tsi awd (which i am currently looking for a tranny for if anyone can help) and i went and counted the splines and i have 21 splines with a space to fit a 22nd spline. so i dont even know if it is 21 or 22 but i know its not 23 and its a 2g.

I'm not a 2G guy, so I can't say what the spline count is, but there are external differences between the 1G and 2G trannys. Go to:

www.teamrip.com

They have some pics of 1G and 2G trannys there. (at least they did at one time) . When I met with Jon and picked mine up, he showed me a 2G tranny he had and some of the differences. One was a different casting for the bellhousing. 2G cars have improved ribbing for added strength.

If you have a pic, post it. I can tell by looking at it. At least the tranny. Not sure about the t-case.

All of 2G trannys have 23 splines to the transfer case. However, as long as you have an output shaft that matches your transfercase, they will mechanically fit. But they will not work, as pre 97 transfer cases have different ratios from 97+.

I would re-count the gears again and make sure that the transfer case matches what you have on the tranny end.

Are you thinking that he sold you a 1G tranny as a 2G? It is easy to tell, as 1G tranny has only one tranny mount (the one on top of the tranny). How about taking some pictures?

I have figured out its a 1g tranny he sent me, it has 2 holes for bolts on top of it. 2g's have 4 or 5 I cant remember (for the black plate).
Thing is I dont know if he did it on purpose, he bought a 97 tsi awd (he even sent me pics of the teardown), and Im thinking it had a 1g motor/tranny put into it somehow..
Because the 1g tranny mount could be mounted to a 1g by simply cutting off the 2g mount on the car and drilling 4 holes through for the 1g mount.
Anyway I bought another 95 awd tranny and already have it, and I will use my 95 xcase i have with it. And I got my money back on the 1g tranny/xcase by disputing the charge on my c/c.

Yes. 95-96 transfer cases are the same as 91-94.

Actually, I think they may be different. I have a 23 xcase from a 93 GSX and a 23 spline xcase from my 95 tsiawd. Right around where the drivegear goes into it from the tranny, they has some different cooling lines if you know what I mean? One has fins, and one doesnt.

That might be the case, but what matters is that they are interchangeble.
