Need Opinions. Car pops out of 1st gear. (Yes, I searched)

I'm thinking of buying a 92 TSi AWD. It has 85,000 miles on it and he's asking 2800 for it. I haven't had a chance to drive but a friend of mine did. He's not very knowledgable about cars but he says it pops out of 1st and feels like theres no 2nd. I don't know much about transmissions, thats why I'm asking you guys. Any help is appreciated.

Haha, well, that's the exact same thing my car does.

Car pops out of 1st unless you let off the clutch VERY slowly and hold the shifer hard in 1st, and there is no second whatsoever.

I thought it might be a problem with the linkage, but I don't think that's what it's gonna end up being.... I believe the trans will need a rebuild.

If it has transmission trouble I would think 2800 is a rip off...

no your tranny doesn't need a rebuild if it shoots outa first it is prolly the 1-2 shiter fork, what happens is, when u race u shift harder than normal, when this happens it can slightly bend a shifter fork, no big deal if u can do your own trans work, thing is like 50 bucks
if it has problems shotting outa first and second feels funny i would bet money it is the shifter fork

Usually popping out of first is caused by too much bearing play. Call or better yet, email one of the big transmission rebuilders.
