I think my '91 awd tranny needs a rebuild. any helpful hints for its removal or is it pretty straight forward? Is there any instructional info available?
thanks, Andy

Best advice I can give you:

Get everything else out of the way, it will be SO much easier.

Seeing that I just did this a month ago....

Yes it's pretty straightforward, but for god's sakes pull apart both sides of the front suspension, that cost me an hour.

Get a tranny jack, don't half ass it like me and use a floor jack with a piece of wood duct taped to it.

Get a couple friends and feed them chips and beer(the beer afterwards)

Another thing, use an engine hoist for the engine, putting jack stands underneath it, even with blocks of wood and rags, is going to dent your oilpan.

Other than the things I mentioned:

Follow this, and have fun inventing a few new curses

danwheelspin: You don't even want to know what I went thru to get the tranny back on...picture someone on their back the tranny supported by one knee and two hands, ramming that ####er on. Take my advice and get that tranny jack and some threaded studs with philips head slots on the top(some nice smooth shoulders would be cool, too) so you can get that puppy line up right. Then when you have it far enough on take those studs out , on at a time, and replace it with the actual bolts and start torquing them down like you would a cylinder head. and make sure that the tranny and engine are both level before you do this, trust me...

I second the tranny jack. I do not have one and getting the transmission back in place is a cast iron bi***.

i used an engine hoist from above a few times, bolting the chains down to various threaded holes on top of the tranny. works great and you can use the leveler to get things lined up better.
