very notchy going into 2nd

Any ideas why it is hard to go into 2nd gear? There are no grinds at all, the cAR doesn't go into 2nd very smoothly?????

Bad syncro, every DSM has problems with sycro's.

The second gear synchro...my worst enemy. The longer you own your DSM, the more you will learn to hate that one piece of your car.....

My 92 was notchy in 2nd ever since I bought it. After a few (alot) of good high RPM launches it now grinds every time. TRE tranny on the way as soon as I'm not broke.

Try a fluid change, it'll help some. BG Synchroshift, Pennzoil Synchromesh or Redline.

Add some Lucas Oil to the tranny, it will help it shift a bit smoother. i did that and once the car is fully warmed up it will shift nice and smooth,but its still notchy when cold.

When I shift into 2nd from 1st gear, i always pull towards me a tiny bit, somewhat diagonal (your sitting to the left of the shifter, you always kinda pull towards you a bit, duh) it grinds, well, makes this ### crunch clink kinda noise. If I invert my hand so my palm is on the left side of the shift knob, thumb facing down and shift to 2nd from 1st, smooth as silk.

My friend had the same problem in his talon, shift down and to the right of 2nd gear and everything was peachy.

I just ordered some new energy suspension bushings for the shifter plate, i'm gonna realign the plate with the stiffer bushings and hopefully that will fix it.

If you want to know if it's your synchro, floor it in first gear, shift at 5000 rpm into 2nd gear, if it goes in 'very easily, hondah like' then try changing fluids, GM synchromesh is the best.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is the same product (with the GM part # on the bottle) and costs about a third less. And, you don't have to deal with a GM counterman.

Yah, the Pennzoil Synchromesh is cheaper. But I couldn't find anyone that had it in stock (canada). So I just drove to a Pontiac dealership and bought a few litres of GM Synchromesh.

Remember, there is more than one Pennzoil Synchromesh, the correct one is:

GM P/N 12345349

I believe there is two types of synchromesh in total, god knows what the hell the other one is.
