As we all know, our trannies are not exactly superman trannies, and our power is like kryptonite. My question is, at about what power rating do our trannies usually start to give out? I know it's different for each car, but I'm just trying to get a feel for an average. I've heard that past about 375hp to 400hp at the crank, our trannies start to give. What about torque? Also, is there anyone that creates a tranny "build" kit, or sells "built" or "reinforced" trannies for our cours? I would think there'd be someone by now given how common of a problem this is and how badass DSM's are.

That sig is hilarious!

It's tough to say when the tranny gives up. It really depends on how hard you beat on it. Shifting too hard will break shift forks and shift rail ends, regardess of power level. It'll also wear down the syncros faster. Old cars with neglected trannies could fail unexpectedly.

Otherwise, for putting down power, I will go along with 375 to 400 whp.

it really depends on how u drive the car, if its a track car that gets launched hard every time it gets driven it might give out around 400bhp, but i know several people running 400+ whp on stock trannies, in both 1g cars and 7 bolt 2g cars, if u drive sensibaly and only launch the car and shift hard when ur seriously racing it should hold up fine, but if u drive around shifting at 6500 all the time and launch ur car every day trying to race slow ass mustangs on the street u should look into getting some tranny work done
and ur fwd, so i have 1 tip for u, wheel hop is ur worst enemy, if ur wheels ever start to hop let off the gas immidiatly, my friend has about 240whp on his 2g fwd and wheel hop blew a hole in the back of his tranny almost 5" in diameter, getting solid urathane motor mounts pretty much elimiates wheel hop

I think the biggest problem with the design of our trannys is the soft aluminum case the gearsets are in, combined with the slant-cut gears. When torque is applied, it puts a lot of pressure on the case. If only someone would be stupid enough to make a billet steel case for me, I'd be very happy and very poor. Either the billet case, or straight-cut gears... hmmm.....
