3 bolt or 4 bolt rearend. How do I know?

I have a 90 and a 91 talon AWD. How do I know if my rear diffs are 3 bolt or 4 bolt? which is better? Both my diffs say LSD on the sticker on the diff its self. Can any one tell me for sure how to tell?

Where the CV shafts bolt up to the outer hub, will have 3 or 4 bolts bolting it together. The 4 bolt is better due to the splined shaft on the inner CV cup being bigger. The 3 bolts tend to twist off in the diff. The actual gears are the same.

Besides there aren't any 4 bolt diffs from '90 or '91, the first year of the 4 bolt was during '92. So the only question would be are they MT or Auto diffs since the gear ratios are different between the two.

so what your saying is that for a 4 bolt rearend you get a 7 bolt engine wih possible crankwalk and for a 6 bolt you get a 3 bolt rearend

me too aren't we lucky, and if you want to you can swap the 3 bolt for a 4 bolt so that you rear end is stronger.

Nope there are '92 hat came with 6 bolt blocks and 4 bolt rear axles from the factory. The rest of us have to swap parts to get there.

I could have had an early '92 but I didn't like the projector lights so I picked a late '91 instead to get the pop up lights. They had both models on the lot in Aug of '91.
